Decked Drawers Installation: Clear Your Calendar
Decked drawers are a useful accessory to a truck. They give you two bed-length drawers that can hold up to 200 pounds each of stuff. The system is designed to hold up to 2,000 pounds on top, so you don’t lose too much truck ability, and they lock. But, they come mostly unassembled.
How hard is it to install Decked bed drawers?
Let’s start with the bad news, first. When my drawers arrived from Decked from the shipping company, they had been through the ringer. The shipping company had a couple snafus, which resulted int eh box getting torn up and a tiny piece of plastic getting broken. The drawers weigh 200 pounds, and they need to be shipped with a special carrier. Get a friend to help you move these things.
The bed drawers come to you unassembled. That means you need to spend some time, several hours, and have some patience to install them. The installation instructions are fun, and Decked likes to have a sense of humor about little things, like constantly reminding you that power tools can strip threads. But, the instructions are a bit hard to follow. Luckily, the video is easy to follow and walks you step-by-step through the process.
How long does it take to install the Decked drawer system?
It took me and my dad most of a Saturday to install the drawers on my Ram 1500. We took our time and didn’t work quickly. Honestly, I spent as much time looking for tools as I did watching the video. If I had all the tools I needed at the beginning and had a firm grasp of the process, it’s probably a two-hour job.
Several of the pieces that you need to put together the system are more un-assembled than others. Take time to understand, for example, how the handle on the drawer goes together. And, like me, you will want to use a drill, but do yourself a favor and set the clutch as low as possible.
Are Decked drawers worth it?
In a separate story, I detail how I use the Decked drawers. So far, they work with how I do truck stuff, which means I haul tools, parts, and some groceries in the drawers. I’m looking forward to using the system on future camping trips.
