Safety recalls affect nearly every make and model of vehicle, and they are a relatively normal part of the car manufacturing experience. Recalls are issued when a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies a problem that may cause a safety issue, allowing owners to get the problem fixed before an actual safety issue arises. Most recalls are due to very minor manufacturing or equipment errors, but it’s important to take even the most seemingly insignificant recall seriously. One of the most recent recalls is in a small number of Chevy Camaros that were manufactured in the late 2010s and early 2020s. 

The latest Chevy Camaro recall

According to Autoblog, Chevrolet issued a recall earlier this year for the Chevy Camaro due to a defect that can make the steering wheel emblem dislodge and potentially lead to injury when the airbag is deployed. Evidently, the problem stems from the fact that the plastic material on the Camaro emblem was improperly molded.

The emblem is placed on the airbag cover, but it can come loose when the airbag is deployed, which could send it flying into the driver’s face. So far, no injuries have been reported as the result of this mis-molded logo emblem, and nobody has complained about the issue. 

The problem was brought to the attention of one of Chevy’s safety engineers as they conducted a normal cold-weather test in January 2021. Interestingly, Chevy asserts that this recall only applies to 30 units of the Camaro that were built between June 2016 and January 2021, though it is unknown whether certain trims or engine types are more affected than others. 

What to do if your car may be affected

Chevrolet plants to start contacting owners of Chevy Camaros that may be affected by the recall in May of this year. According to the NHTSA, owners will then have to take their vehicle to a GM authorized service center, and a technician will change the airbag equipment for free. The actual service of replacing your airbag module will take about 45 minutes, but other factors may affect the actual duration of service.
