Only 1 Detroit Automaker Landed on the 20 Most US-Made Vehicles List for 2024
Every year, Cars.com ranks the vehicles with the best claim to being made in the U.S.A. Many foreign automakers have responded to tariffs by opening factories in the U.S. As a result, the Jeep Gladiator is the only vehicle made by any of the Detroit Three that landed in 2024’s Top Ten. And even that one hails from just across the Ohio border. In fact, the only competitor from Michigan is another Stellantis product: the Ram 1500 Classic, which got #19. But a surprising U.S. brand took the #1 spot: Tesla.

So how in the world are these Japanese and German vehicles among the most “American-made” cars? Cars.com uses five criteria in its “American Made Index.” There is location of final assembly, the engine’s country of origin, the transmission’s country of origin, the percentage of parts that come from either the U.S. or Canada, and the number of manufacturing employees the company has in the U.S. Thanks to the Automobile Labeling Act, manufacturers must print those first four data points on the window sticker of every new vehicle lighter than a heavy-duty pickup truck (so regular half-tons and smaller).
Cars.com considers relatively popular vehicles lighter than heavy-duty trucks for its listing. So the “Air” EV by the Lucid startup was too niche to qualify, even though it is assembled in the U.S. The Cybertruck is too heavy to make the list. Overall, 100 models qualified this year.
So where are all the Detroit automakers? While Detroit automakers assemble some vehicles in Mexico and Canada, dozens come from the U.S.A. But few of these models included a high enough percentage of parts from either the U.S. or Canada to land in the list’s top 20. So while the Jeep Wrangler is made in Toledo, Ohio–alongside the Gladiator–it has a lower percentage of U.S./Canada parts and landed at #30.
Likewise, Jeep’s Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs are made alongside the Ram 1500 “Classic” in Warren, Michigan. But again, fewer U.S./Canada parts mean they landed at #44.
A #44 finish isn’t the end of the world. Landing on the list at all is an achievement. Many “Detroit” models, such as the Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge’s cars, are made in Canada. Many others, such as the Ford Maverick, Chevy Blazer, Ram’s heavy-duty trucks are assembled in Mexico.
So what about Tesla? This relatively new automaker assembles 100% of models sold in the U.S. right here in the U.S. That is a distinction no other company can claim. In previous years, Tesla’s only four models gots spots one through four on the AMI. Tesla didn’t change anything this year, but other automakers upped their game and broke up that sweep.
