Did 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Solve Its Biggest Problem?
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is finally on its way after receiving some significant updates. But will the updates solve the Subaru Crosstreks’ biggest problem? Hopefully, because it had one major drawback that prevented sales.
Is the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek a good SUV?
Yes, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek could be a good SUV if it took steps to correct a major issue with previous models. Old Subaru Crosstrek models are known for being pretty slow, with a weak acceleration.
The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek takes 9.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, which is pretty sluggish. It’s a little disappointing to have such a sporty wagon that’s difficult to pass people on the highway and makes pulling out into traffic harder.

One of the most popular questions about this model is, “Is the Subaru Crosstrek underpowered?” The answer is yes. The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is pretty underpowered. It only has a 2,0-liter four-cylinder engine that provides 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The Crosstrek can only tow 1,500 lb, too, making it just too weak.
Will the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek have more power?
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek aims to correct its sluggish stereotype with a brand new turbo engine option. The Subaru Crosstrek Sport will have the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine that’s in the Subaru Forester.
But before you get excited, the Subaru Crosstrek isn’t getting the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that pumps out 310 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. Instead, it will have 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 30 horsepower and 31 lb-ft of torque.
Also, this engine will only pair with the 10-speed automatic CVT transmission, so don’t get excited about a faster manual option. The speed of the 2021 Crosstrek Sport hasn’t been tested yet. However, we do know that it won’t impact it’s fuel economy much.
The 2.5-liter engine should provide the Subaru Crosstrek with the ability to get 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. These numbers are great, considering the larger displacement and increased power output.
2021 Subaru Crosstrek features
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek price will start around $23k. That’s for the base model with the 2.0-liter engine. The Subaru Crosstrek Sport will cost about $27k, so it will cost about an extra $4k to gain 30 additional horsepower. That’s one expensive upgrade.
Also, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport will be the only model to feature the dual-function X-Mode that optimizes the all-wheel-drive system with the twist of a knob. It adjusts to a variety of slippery conditions with modes for snow, ice, mud, and sand.
The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek will be safer with more driver-assist features. You get Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance tech, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering technology, pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning, and more.
Each Crosstrek trim will come with a 6.5″ infotainment center that can connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, on higher trim options, you can upgrade to the 8″ infotainment center. A power sunroof is also a new optional feature.
