We keep hearing rumors that a new Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 is in the works but the manufacturers are keeping a tight lid on details. So we were surprised to hear that Subaru has announced it has stopped accepting orders for the 2020 BRZ. So did Subaru just stop making the BRZ? And if so why now?

Subaru will no longer take orders for the BRZ

First, Subaru will no longer take orders for the BRZ so if you want one now you’ll have to settle for whatever is on the dealer lots. “We have finished accepting orders for build-to-order manufacturing of the models listed,” a statement from Subaru says. “Due to stock availability at retailers, we may not be able to meet customer requests for body colors and options. Please contact your dealer for more information.”

When the manufacturers stop taking orders on certain models it is usually an indication that production for that model is coming to an end. It is expected that production for the two models will continue through the fall. Both are built in Gunma, Japan. 

Rumors suggest 2021 is when the new BRZ/86 will arrive

This is also an indication that the new BRZ/86 is on the horizon. Rumors suggest 2021 is when it will arrive but again Toyota and Subaru are not revealing much. What we know is that some say they will be based on the TNGA platform. Other rumors suggest a variation of the Subaru Impreza frame will underpin the BRZ/86. 

Speculation is that Subaru will possibly power the next BRZ with its 2.4-liter flat-four, but it is not known if it will incorporate turbocharging. On the other side, some think the twins will get a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. As you can tell the rumors run wild.

The BRZ/86 has been around since production began in 2012. While the entry-level sports car still looks contemporary, eight-nine years is a long time without so much as a small refresh. So it’s time for a new version. 

With 205 hp it could use a bit more power. Still, the BRZ/86 is a fun car to drive. There’s plenty of feedback and with a manual-only six-speed transmission you know it’s a driver’s car. A six-speed automatic is also available but with a car like this why would you? Competition from the Mazda Miata favors the BRZ/86 if you want a bit more room on the inside as well as more cargo capacity. 

The best of the BRZ offerings is the tS model

The best of the BRZ offerings is the tS model with adjustable dampers and better Brembo brakes. It also includes unique 18-inch wheels, better tires, extra body bracing, an adjustable rear wing, and unique front fascia. Subaru’s STI performance division fine-tunes the chassis of every tS upgrade. 

While we’ve always loved the BRZ/86 we can’t wait to see what the Subaru/Toyota duo conjure up for the next generation.
