The Acura TSX was the brand’s compact sedan offering that was discontinued in 2014, but did you know that it had a wagon variant? That’s right, the luxury automaker once produced the TSX Sport Wagon, which only lasted a short period of time, but it had the style, luxurious amenities, and sportiness that you would come to expect from the brand.

The Acura TSX Sport Wagon missed the mark

As car enthusiasts, we have a natural soft spot for all vehicles that wrap sportiness and practicality into one neat package. Ask any auto journalist what they think about the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon and you’re sure to be instantly met with an ear-to-ear smile. Performance and practicality are always a good thing, and the added dose of reliability makes the equation better. So when Acura debuted the TSX Sport Wagon back in 2011, you would think that it would have been a hit, right?

Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Acura only sold about 3,000 TSX Sport Wagon units during its first year out, which picked up slightly in 2012 as the brand was then able to sell 4,000 of them. However, for the last year that it was out, 2013, sales declined to under 2,000 and Acura ended up discontinuing it in 2014 in favor of the forthcoming ILX sedan.

The TSX Sport Wagon was still an Acura

Although the general public didn’t see eye-to-eye with Acura’s product planners — much less the auto critics that reported great things about the car – the TSX Sport Wagon was still a great car through and through. It was based on the existing Acura TSX sedan, which meant that it had the same 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine and all of the same luxury features, but with the addition of a more practical wagon shape. In fact, from the B-pillar forward, the Sport Wagon was identical to the sedan.

According to Car and Driver, the TSX Sport Wagon is agile, has quick and competent steering, and excellent brake pedal feel. However, they also noted that its 201-hp engine offered mediocre acceleration and the lack of a manual transmission option or a V6 (unlike the TSX sedan) was a letdown. Otherwise, the TSX Sport Wagon proved to be a practical wagon with all of the style and efficiency that the TSX sedan had laid out before it.

It still had the stigma

We have to wonder why more wagons like the TSX Sport Wagon don’t exist on the market today. Could it be that there is such a strong stigma among Americans that wagons are reserved for “soccer moms” or “vacation dads?” Possibly.

But the good news is that if you want an Acura TSX Sport Wagon today, you can currently find them nationwide for around $15,000 depending on the car’s location and condition. This is a bargain considering the car retailed for around $31,000 when it was new and you can expect it to last for many years, given Acura’s reputation for reliability.
