Diesel or Gas: Looking for a Used 2018 Ford F-150
The success of the Ford F-Series trucks is partially due to the array of choices buyers have. Back in 2018, that was doubly true when it came to engine choices. Ford offered five engines, four of them gasoline-powered, with a new 3.0-liter V6 diesel PowerStroke. So now six years later, if you’re thinking about a used 2018 F-150, you need to narrow your choices as you search. So, should you go with diesel or gas?
What engine options did the 2018 Ford F-150 have?
The five engines are the 3.3-liter V6 base, 2.7-liter EcoBoost, 5.0-liter V8, 3.5-liter EcoBoost, and 3.0-liter PowerStroke diesel. In many cases, the engine you find in a used 2018 F-150 will depend on what model it is. For starters, the base 3.3-liter was only available on XL and XLT trims. Optional on those two trims are the 2.7 EcoBoost and 5.0-liter V8.
Moving up to a Lariat, the 2.7 EcoBoost, 5.0 V8, and 3.0 PowerStroke are all available. For the King Ranch and Platinum F-150 trims, the V8 and PowerStroke are the two engines you’ll find. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost was only available with the Limited trim.
We should add that if you find an XL or XLT trim with the PowerStroke, it is a fleet model. That was the only way to get a diesel engine in those lower trims. So depending on the engine you want, now you can eliminate certain trims that are advertised.
What are the engine and towing specifications for the 2018 F-150?
The engine combination you’re looking for will obviously be based on what your plans are for the truck, so that means towing and payload capacities are important. Below is Ford’s list of each engine’s specifications to help narrow your search a bit more.
