What’s the Difference Between a Genesis GV70 and GV80 SUV?
The Genesis GV70 and GV80 are two of the brand’s most popular models. They sell well enough that dealers sometimes mark them up by over 20%. But what’s the difference between these two Genesis luxury SUVs besides the GV70’s $43,150 base price and the GV80’s $55,550 base price? The MSRP differential is only the beginning.
Genesis GV70 vs. GV80: Size difference
Both offer generous passenger and cargo space, but the GV80 is larger. It can seat five in two rows or seven in three rows. With the GV80’s third-row seats folded down, this midsize SUV provides 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space. The GV70 has 28.9 cubic feet behind the second row. However, the GV70’s compact size improves its performance and handling with its Sport+ mode, while the GV80 is geared more toward luxury.
GV70 vs. GV80: Ground clearance
The GV80 has a higher ride stance than the best-selling GV70, so the larger SUV has more ground clearance at 8.1 inches. It also comes standard with all-wheel drive. Depending on the trim, the GV70 has standard or optional AWD. And it has 7.3 inches of ground clearance. Multiple wheel options are available for both SUVs, with both maintaining their respective ride heights.
GV70 vs. GV80: Fuel economy
Because the reliable GV70 is smaller, it has an advantage over the GV80 in fuel economy. Both SUVs pack the same 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 300 hp. A 375-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 is optional. EPA-estimated gas mileage for the GV70 with the 2.5-liter is 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The GV80 gets 21/25 mpg city/highway. With the 3.5-liter V6, mileage is 19/25 mpg city/highway for the GV70 and 18/23 mpg city/highway for the GV80. Neither SUV has a hybrid or EV version yet, but an electric GV70 is coming.
GV70 vs. GV80: Technology
Because the GV70 is newer, debuting in 2022, it has an edge over the GV80, which came out in 2021. Each has a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, head-up display, 3D-effect gauges, and Lexicon audio system. The GV70 boasts wireless device charging, an infotainment control dial, and a taller center console for easier functionality.
How do these luxury SUVs differ in safety?
Both SUVs offer the same safety and advanced driver-assistance systems. The GV80 earned a five-star NHTSA safety rating. However, the agency has not rated the GV70 yet. But both SUVs received IIHS Top Safety Pick+ honors.
What are their interior differences?
We’ve already touched on tech and safety features for the GV70 and GV80. Both feature quilted leather seats with similar accents and ambient lighting. So other than size, they’re equal in interior appointments.
Ultimately, the choice between these two luxury SUVs depends on your needs. If cargo capacity and passenger space are important, the GV80 delivers. If a nimbler SUV has an edge in economy and handling, the GV70 might be the better way to go. As with everything, personal preferences will lead you to the right SUV.
