The Toyota Sienna was redesigned for the 2021 model year and with it came some serious changes. The Sienna now has a bold new look, a new hybrid powertrain, and some new features. But now the 2022 model is gracing dealer showrooms, which may leave some buyers wondering if any changes were made between the model years.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna Woodland Edition is the biggest news

If your family likes to spend time in the great outdoors, then you’ll like what the Toyota Sienna is bringing to the table for 2022. The main draw for this model year is the Sienna Woodland Edition, which provides an SUV-like approach with a lifted ride height and standard all-wheel drive. That’s right, the Sienna is putting its hiking boots on this year and showing active families that it can do more than pick up the kids from soccer practice.

Car and Driver reports that the Sienna Woodland Edition’s all-wheel-drive setup is the same one found on the other trim levels. It features an electric motor on the rear axle that drives the rear wheels and works in conjunction with the 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain upfront. The Woodland Edition’s main mechanical change is the 0.6-inch lift that equates to a total ground clearance height of 6.9 inches.

That’s only about 1.1 inches less than the Highlander, which means that Sienna Woodland can tread lightly on uneven ground and go up rocky pathways, but you might want to keep it out of some of the rougher stuff.

The Sienna Woodland Edition also adds a tougher look with the choice between Midnight Black or a special Cement exterior color along with black badges. Other standard features on this new trim level include roof-rack crossbars, a 1,500-watt power outlet, and a tow hitch.

While the new Woodland Edition adds the most value for the outdoorsy types, the Sienna XSE trim has the most value for those that like to keep the wheels on paved roads. The Sienna XSE trim level is the sportier model as it comes with more aggressive front and rear bumpers, sport front seats, a sport-tuned suspension, and 20-inch wheels. Don’t worry, that sportier suspension won’t beat you up with a rough ride, if anything, it actually adds a little more fun to the practical people hauler.

Additionally, the Sienna XSE comes standard with an onboard navigation system and second-row captain’s chairs. A front-wheel-drive configuration is also standard, but the all-wheel-drivetrain can be added for an extra $760.

Lastly, if you want all of the bells and whistles, then you can get the top-trim Sienna Platinum, which includes a 360-degree camera and 10-inch head-up display, for a cool $50,000.
