One of the most popular midsize trucks is the 2022 Ford Ranger. Although it’s not the F-150, plenty are interested and have questions about it. A common question is whether or not it’s available with a V6 engine. If you’re buying a Ranger for its pickup truck power, you’ll want as much as possible. Unfortunately, Ford only gave us one engine to choose from, but is it a V6 or something else?

For the 2022 model year, there is only one Ford Ranger engine. The standard option is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that generates 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. According to Car and Driver, the speed and agility of the Ranger XL are surprisingly good using this setup. In addition, rear-wheel drive is standard, as is 8.4-inches of ground clearance. However, four-wheel drive is available, and those versions boost ground clearance up to 8.9 inches.

As a result, there is no V6 engine available for the 2022 Ford Ranger. Ford’s midsize truck is missing an upgraded engine, but that could change for some markets in 2023. Is the Ranger falling behind its rivals by not offering a V6 option? For example, the most popular truck in the segment, the Toyota Tacoma, has a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder, but a 3.5-liter V6 is optionally available.

Will the 2023 Ford Ranger have a V6?

The good news is the 2023 Ford Ranger will likely have an available V6 engine. The bad news is the automaker will lock it behind the paywall of the new Ranger Raptor. According to KBB, the Raptor variant will use a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 392 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. There’s even a diesel engine set to make its debut under Ranger hoods, but it isn’t coming to America.

Furthermore, Car and Driver estimates the Ranger Raptor will start at $44,500. Fortunately, the off-road midsize truck will be very well-equipped. For example, a unique long-travel suspension, 33-inch all-terrain tires, Fox Live Valve shock absorbers, a more muscular frame, skidplates, anti-lag, on and off-road driving modes, and much more.

However, those uninterested in the higher price and off-roading features will be unable to purchase V6-equipped Ranger. Compared to competitors, this isn’t too out of the ordinary. Many trucks only come with a more powerful engine if buyers get the off-road or highest trim level. However, the Toyota Tacoma has an optional V6 for even the base model.

The Ranger is an excellent choice if you’re interested in a midsize truck. However, you won’t be able to find one with a V6 engine under the hood. Still, the Ranger is surprisingly capable, even with its turbocharged four-cylinder. More specifically, Ford’s midsize truck can tow 7,500 pounds using the optional tow package. Moreover, the payload capacity is 1,860 pounds, which is average for the class.

Ford’s revived midsize truck is meant for those who need some truck utility without the pain points of a gigantic F-150. With an excellent ride quality, ample power, and class-average towing capacity, you won’t miss a V6 engine too much. Furthermore, if off-roading and a more powerful engine are necessary, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor is coming sometime in 2023.
