Are you shopping for a new full-size pickup truck? The segment of vehicles is filled with excellent options, all of which have different engines. Unlike many others, the 2022 Toyota Tundra does not have different engines to choose from. Moreover, some people only want a pickup with a V8 engine under the hood. Does the 2022 Toyota Tundra have a V8?

According to Car and Driver, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is the only full-size truck that doesn’t offer a V8 engine. Instead, every version comes with a twin-turbo V6, but there are three different versions. On the base SR trim, it produces 348 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. Alternatively, other trims get the non-hybrid engine with 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. C/D said the non-hybrid Tundra Limited registered a 6.1-second zero-to-60-mph time on its test track.

Next, there’s a hybrid variant of the same engine. It features an electric motor integrated into the 10-speed automatic transmission. As a result, hybrid Tundra models are capable of all-electric driving at low speeds. This comes in serious handy if you’re someone who tends to let the fuel run as low as possible. Using the hybrid engine, the Tundra makes 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. In addition, it lowers the 0-60 time to just 5.7-seconds.

Unfortunately, the 2022 Toyota Tundra does not have a V8 engine. As a result, it’s the only full-size truck that doesn’t at least offer one as an option. Instead, the Tundra lineup features a powerful, smooth-riding V6 and a more powerful hybrid alternative. On the plus side, the most expensive version of the non-hybrid Tundra is just over $60,000.

While that might seem like a high price, it’s actually much less than fully-loaded rivals. For example, the most popular Ford F-150 Limited costs $79,055. However, the more powerful hybrid powertrain boosts the Tundra’s price quite a lot. A Capstone Hybrid costs $76,025, the TRD Pro Hybrid is $69,300, and the cheapest hybrid variant starts at $54,795. As a result, more power and slightly better fuel economy are costly when buying a 2022 Toyota Tundra.

Tundra towing and fuel economy

With no available V8 engine, is the Toyota full-size truck as capable as its rivals? At its best, the 2022 Toyota Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds. That’s a bit behind competitors like the F-150, which can pull 14,000 pounds. In addition, the highest payload a Tundra can haul is 1,940, which falls short of Ford’s full-size truck at 3,250 pounds.

The non-hybrid model with two-wheel drive is rated for 18 city and 24 highway mpg for fuel economy. However, all-wheel drive drops those numbers by one each. Furthermore, the hybrid powertrain turns it into 20 city and 24 highway mpg. While it is an improvement, we’d recommend buying the hybrid engine for the improved power more than the fuel economy.

Should you buy a 2022 Toyota Tundra?

If you’re in the market for an upscale, reliable full-size truck, check out the 2022 Toyota Tundra. While it doesn’t come with a V8 engine, the hybrid powertrain is an excellent, viable alternative. Thanks to the electric motor, it adds power and a little bit of fuel economy. However, the Tundra is the only model in its class without a V8 option.
