It’s time to put on our detective hats and take a closer look at the Ford Explorer. It’s no secret that Ford has been hammering out recalls for vehicles like the Expedition, Mustang Mach-E, and Explorer. But should they make you think twice before buying the 2022 Ford Explorer? 

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer worth buying? 

Yes, the 2022 Ford Explorer is an excellent three-row SUV to consider. It has robust engine options with plenty of power for towing and off-roading capabilities. There is plenty of space in the first and second rows with extra room in the third. 

Plus, tons of driver aids, tech, and safety features come standard. There is a trim level for everyone. If you want to race around town, check out the ST. If you want luxury comfort, check out the King Ranch. Also, the Ford Explorer Timberline is great for adventuring. 

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Ford is struggling with its quality. The Ford Explorer is one model in particular that has experienced a high number of recalls. It even had a recent fire risk. 

Ford has issued recalls that cover about 6.82 million vehicles so far this year, while Tesla has issued recalls for about 2.26 million vehicles. But the Explorer isn’t alone. The F-150 Lightning, Ford Bronco, Ford Maverick, and more have faced issues. 

What are the biggest Explorer problems? 

The 2022 Ford Explorer has had three recalls so far. One was for the engine and structure. Improperly treated engine rails could reduce the vehicle’s structure protection in the event of an accident, increasing the risk of injuries. 

Also, the engine rail could detach and come into contact with the road while driving, increasing the risk of crashing. 

The second recall involved a powertrain issue. A disconnected driveshaft could allow the vehicle to roll away while in park without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of crashes and injuries. 

The third recall is the one that involves fire. The fuel filler tube may detach, resulting in a fuel leak. This increases the risk of fire while in traffic or while the vehicle is parked. 

Some say that the remodeled Ford Explorer was rushed back in 2020, so it had issues when it arrived, such as transmission problems, drive system issues, electronic problems, and power equipment trouble. 

But there are fewer reports of these issues for the 2021 and 2020 models so far, indicating that they may have been solved. Its quality could be improving. 

Is the Explorer improving? 

Yes, the 2022 Ford Explorer and other models in the lineup are getting better. The 2020 model had 14 recalls, and the 2021 model had five. Plus, the issues were fixed by Ford technicians for free. 

Ford also brought Josh Halliburton to the team in January to improve its overall quality record. He’s there to restore the brand’s reputation by making quality the number one priority. He’s improving how problems are identified. 

Josh had cameras installed on production lines to catch flaws and pays attention to social media channels to see what customers are complaining about. Highly anticipated vehicles shouldn’t have problems right out the gate as the Ford Explorer did. 

While the Explorer does have a history of problems, it’s already quickly improving. It’s only getting better and better.
