Does the Jeep Wrangler Have a Dodge Ram Engine?
You can order the Jeep Wrangler with a wide range of engines. This includes several engines Jeep shares with Dodge muscle cars and Ram pickup trucks. But Jeep also has unique engine options you can’t currently order in any Dodge vehicle or Ram truck–but you may be able to soon.
Does the Jeep Wrangler have a Dodge Ram engine?
The current generation of the Jeep Wrangler shares gasoline and diesel V6 engine options with the Ram 1500 pickup truck. An upper trim level of the Wrangler shares the 392 cubic-inch HEMI V8 with heavy-duty Ram trucks.
One of the most common Jeep Wrangler engines is its standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. This is a common engine across many Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler products as well. It is the base engine of the Ram 1500 pickup truck. It makes 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.
A rarer Jeep Wrangler engine is the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6. While heavy-duty Ram pickup trucks offer the infamous Cummins I6 turbodiesel, the half-ton Ram 1500 has offered the company’s in-house EcoDiesel since 2014. The last year of the EcoDiesel Wrangler will be 2023.
Jeep launched its Wrangler 392 for the 2021 model year. This Jeep Wrangler Unlimited features a 392 cubic-inch (6.4-liter) HEMI V8. This is the largest displacement V8 Dodge/Ram/Chrysler builds. You can find a similar engine in the Dodge Scatpack lineup or Ram’s heavy-duty pickup trucks, as well as some trims of Jeep’s new Grand Wagoneer SUV.
Does Jeep build its own engines?
The Jeep Wrangler’s entry-level I4 is not offered in most Dodge cars or Ram trucks. Jeep is also pioneering a plug-in hybrid powertrain with its 4xe, technology that we might get in future Rams and Dodges.
The smallest Jeep Wrangler engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4. It makes an impressive 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Technically, this efficient and powerful engine costs the same as the Wrangler’s standard V6. But it is not available with a manual transmission, and Jeep charged $2,000 to upgrade to an automatic.
The 2.0-liter I4 is common in Stellantis vehicles sold in Europe and will power the 2023 Dodge Hornet. But it is not offered in any of the current Ram pickup trucks or Dodge muscle cars. Jeep also used this engine as the basis of its new plug-in hybrid, the 4xe.
Can you buy a Dodge or Ram 4xe?
For the time being, Jeep is the only Stellantis brand offering the 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale/Dodge Hornet both offer PHEV drivetrains–not badged as the 4xe. Ram and Dodge are targeting 2024 launches of fully electric vehicles.
Jeep first launched its 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain in the 2021 model year Wrangler. It includes the 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 as well as a powerful electric motor. The result can make 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. That’s as much torque as the HEMI V8 Wrangler 392. It also offers 20+ miles of all-electric range, depending on driving conditions.
The Jeep 4xe powertrain–currently available in the Wrangler and Cherokee–is unique among Stellantis’ North American offerings. In fact, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the only full-frame plug-in hybrid SUV you can buy. It is also the only Wrangler available in Europe.
