Over the years, the primary customers for pickup trucks have changed slightly. Trucks are no longer used for strictly work-related purposes. In fact, many more rich buyers collect trucks or use them for daily driving. Because of this, and the demand for more car tech in general, trucks have many more standard technology features.

One feature that a lot of consumers look for is smartphone connectivity. Using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, users can sync their phone with the car’s infotainment system. They can play music, access their picture libraries, and use the phone’s navigation through the car’s touchscreen. Does Nissan’s popular truck, the Titan, come equipped with this feature?

The Nissan Titan’s infotainment

In earlier model years, Android Auto was not standard on the Titan. Even on the pricier trims, like the SL or Platinum Reserve, smartphone connectivity was not an option. However, these versions of the Titan did include a 7-inch touchscreen and a premium audio system.

For 2019, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were made standard in the base Titan. The 7-inch touchscreen is also included. Other new technology offerings for this year are Bluetooth, a USB port, and satellite radio. Things got even better on 2020 models, with an 8-inch touchscreen being the new standard.

More optional upgrades were added, like a Wi-fi hotspot, wireless charging, and a Fender audio system. This advanced technology is definitely an improvement over previous years. However, Kelley Blue Book noted that some rivals’ infotainment systems are still more functional than the Titan’s.

Towing and hauling features

The Titan has several utility packages available to increase its towing capabilities. For the base model, you can get a Class IV tow hitch and a spray-on bedliner. The slightly more expensive SV can have LED bed lights and a power outlet inside the cargo box.

Higher trims can also have the Utili-track system, a set of moveable tie-downs to help secure any kind of cargo. A retractable rear bumper step and a power locking tailgate are also available. Some trims can also have storage bins on either side of the bed, identical to Ramboxes.

Safety technology

The Titan definitely doesn’t have as many standard safety features as its rivals. In earlier model years, its only advanced offering was a rearview camera. King and Crew cab models also came with rear door alert, a feature introduced by Nissan to combat heatstroke incidents.

In 2020, the Titan got some much-needed standard driver’s assistance functions. These include blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking. Pricier trims have even more options, like a 360-degree view camera and adaptive cruise control.

What other trucks have Android Auto?

The good news for Android users is that most newer trucks have Android Auto connectivity. However, it may only be available on certain trims. Both the base and the Tradesman trim of the Ram lack Android Auto. It’s not included on the standard F-150, but you can find it in most of the other trims.

Both the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra have standard Android Auto on every trim. The same is the case for the Chevy Colorado, Silverado, and its heavy-duty versions. On trucks from before 2019, you’ll need to get a higher trim for smartphone connectivity. The Nissan Frontier is only available with Android Auto if you purchase the NissanConnect feature.

Is the Titan a good truck?

The added technology offerings are a big step in the right direction. The Titan still falls short in the towing department, with a maximum capacity of only 9,660 pounds.  However, it still has a powerful engine, a spacious cargo box, and a comfortable interior.
