The Tundra is Toyota’s competitor in the full-size pickup truck market. Ram, Ford, and Chevy all offer stripped-down, two-door fleet trucks for $30k. But Toyota does not offer a full-size two-door truck. The cheapest 2022 Toyota Tundra trim starts at $35,950. Here’s what you get with Toyota’s entry-level Tundra trims.

Toyota no longer offers a two-door Tundra fleet truck

You can still buy a Ford F-150 XL for just $29,990. The Chevy Silverado Work Truck starts at $29,595. Ram only offers its fifth-generation 1500s with four-door cabs so they’re a bit more expensive. But in 2022, you can still order a fourth-generation 1500 badged as a 2022 Ram Classic for $29,515.

All of these $30k trucks are 2WD, two-door models with entry-level engines. They are as much targeted at truck fleet operators as individual truck owners. Most of these models have crank-up windows, manual door locks, and no cruise control.

But Toyota is not bothering with the $30k price point. In fact, Toyota’s not even bothering to offer a two-door work truck version of the Tundra. You can buy a Tundra SR with an eight-foot bed. But there’s no regular cab option. In many ways, the entry-level Toyota Tundra would be considered a mid-trim truck from any other automaker.

The 2022 Toyota SR starts at $35,950

The 2022 Toyota Tundra SR is easy to spot. It has a black plastic grille and black plastic grille surround. It also comes from the factory on 18-inch “styled” steel wheels. Finally, its “A-Pillar” between the front and rear doors is painted the same color as its body, not black like on other trims.

Toyota offers more standard features on its Tundra SR than other automakers offer on entry-level trucks. For example, the Tundra SR comes with cloth upholstery instead of vinyl. It also has LED headlights, daytime running lights, and a powered rear window.

Toyota builds the Tundra SR with an 8-inch touchscreen loaded with Apple Carplay/Android Auto and connected to nine speakers. The Tundra SR even has a “smart key” system with a push-button start.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra SR only makes 348 horsepower

Every 2022 Toyota Tundra is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine. In top-trim trucks, Toyota connected this engine to a powerful electric motor. The resulting i-FORCE MAX hybrid drivetrain makes more torque than an F-150 Raptor. All other trim levels come standard with the non-hybrid V6. But not all of these 3.4L V6s are equal.

According to The Fast Lane (TFL) Truck, Toyota has actually de-tuned the V6 in the Tundra SR. The non-hybrid V6 makes 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque in most Tundras. But in the 2022 Tundra SR, this engine only makes 348 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque.

Because of its de-tuned engine, the Toyota SR can only tow 8,300 pounds while mid-trim Tundras can tow 11,000 (4WD) and 12,000 (2WD).
