Dodge Chargers are as crucial to Fast and Furious movies as Corona beer and speeches about family. But the latest installment, The Fast Saga: F9, features more of Chargers than any previous film. These include Dom’s Charger from the first movie and the most powerful Charger the film crew has ever built. Learn more about the five Dodge Chargers from F9.

Jack Toretto’s 1970 Charger R/T – Dom’s Charger for drag racing

The first Dodge Charger to appear in the Fast Saga was a 1970 Charger R/T with a roots style Supercharger. In 2001’s The Fast and The Furious Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) shows the muscle car to Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker). Dom says his father’s drag-racing Charger makes 900 horsepower and can run a 9-second 1/4-mile. Finally, he reveals that he’s never driven it because it scares him.

Later, Dom uses this Charger to chase down some bad guys before wrecking it in a street race. Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) repairs it while he is on the run. The iconic car appears in most Fast Saga films since, is often totaled and is always repaired. Dom’s Charger for drag-racing is parked in his barn during F9. The car is also central to flashbacks of Dom and his father, Jack Toretto. But it would be impossible to daily drive a race car, so Dom owns a custom pro-touring Charger as well.

1970 Charger “Tantrum” – Dom’s Charger for daily driving

Speedkore Performance Group is a custom vehicle shop located in Grafton, Wisconsin. The shop specializes in carbon-fiber-bodied muscle cars. The 1970 Charger nicknamed “Tantrum” is one of Speedkore’s masterpieces. A lightweight, carbon fiber replica has replaced this car’s metal body. Speedkore also swapped a 9.0-liter boat engine rated at 1650 horsepower into this incredible car.

The Speedkore “Tantrum” 1970 Charger has been featured on Jay Leno’s Garage and is owned by Kevin Hart. The car made an appearance in The Fate of the Furious, parked in the crew’s hideout. At the opening of F9, Dominic Toretto is living in an off-grid farmhouse. The Tantrum appears to be Dom’s Charger for daily driving. He drives the car to the airport, into Los Angeles to talk to an old friend, and back to the “1327” house at the film’s end.

2020 Dodge Charger Hellcat Widebody – The jungle chase car

Over the years, the Fast and Furious movies have become a vehicle for Stellantis product placement. So it is unsurprising that F9 features the latest, greatest SRT-designed muscle car. F9 showcases a 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat with a widebody kit. The Charger features the supercharged Hellcat engine tuned for 707 horsepower. SRT also equipped the car with track-tuned suspension and a reinforced drivetrain. The car is black with racing stripes and a red pinstripe. 

Toretto and his crew fly to the fictional country of Montequinto in Central America, where he picks up the 2020 Hellcat. While escaping a convoy of military G Wagons, Dom flogs the new Charger through the jungle and across a minefield. At the end of the chase, he drives the car off a cliff in one of the most memorable Fast and Furious physics-defying stunts.

1966 Dodge Charger – Dom’s Charger from the flashback

During F9, we also enjoy flashbacks of Dominic Toretto and his brother Jakob (John Cena) growing up in Los Angeles. When Dom challenges Jakob to a drag race, he is driving a 1966 Dodge Charger. Dodge designed the first generation of the Charger (1966-67) to compete with the wildly popular Ford Mustang. Though the Charger was much larger than the Mustang or Camaro it was a two-door coupe featuring a dramatic fastback. Dodge offered its first-generation Chargers with its fastest V8 engines. The first-generation Charger was a unique, eye-catching car, unfortunately overshadowed by the legendary second-generation (1968-1970) Chargers.

Jakob recognizes the 1966 as “Buddy’s old Charger,” Buddy being their father’s pit chief. The Charger is a manual transmission model that someone has equipped with NOS. It is painted gray with a black hood and wears “129 PCE” California plates. Dom uses it to beat Jakob’s 1992 “fox body” Mustang in a drag race.

Mid-Engine 1970 Charger 500 – The fastest Charger yet

For F9, the film crew built their highest horsepower 1970 Charger ever. This extreme new car features a Speedkore-built mid-engine chassis and carbon fiber body. Underneath its rear window rumbles a Hellcat engine tuned for 800 horsepower. A Lamborghini transaxle with a true, three-pedal manual transmission put the power to the rear wheels. The agile car not only features 40/60 front/rear weight distribution, but it is one of the lowest cars built for any Fast and Furious movie.

During F9, Dominic Toretto unveils his custom, mid-engine Charger for a chase sequence in Edinburgh, Scotland. The then equips the car with some advanced magnet technology and transports it to Tbilisi, Georgia, for the film’s final chase. Dom globetrotting with his car may seem far-fetched, but parachuting vehicles out of military planes is one of the most realistic Fast and Furious stunts.

[Spoiler Alert] At the end of F9, Dominic Toretto reconciles with his brother Jakob. With Jakob’s vehicle destroyed, Dom decides to give him the keys to his mid-engine Charger. The scene is a callback to Brian giving Dom his car at the end of The Fast and The Furious.
