At an above-average starting price tag of $44,100 for an Audi Q5 Premium model, a good but unenthusiastic rating may not be enough to persuade you to purchase. Instead, there are better options with other comparable luxury compact SUVs on the market. What U.S. News & World Report had to say about the Audi Q5 is that it doesn’t really excel in any one area. Handling is not exactly high-performance but adequate. The J.D. Power reliability score was rated fair at 63 out of 100.
Even the cargo space is not much to speak of. For a standard body style, the Audi Q5 only provides 25.8 cubic feet behind the second row and 54 cubic feet when the back seats are folded down. The Sportback model provides even less space.
However, those mediocre qualities are balanced with a comfortable ride, with the best rides in the model found when equipped with the optional air suspension. U.S. News considers the interior of the Audi Q5 high-quality while the technology is user-friendly. Not to mention that it did score high in safety with a 9.8 (out of 10) score.
Better luxury SUV options for about the same price
U.S. News rated the 2022 BMW X3 and the 2022 Volvo XC60 slightly higher than the 2022 Audi Q5. The Audi Q5 had an overall rating of 8.1 out of 10, the BMW X3 came in at 8.4, and the Volvo XC60 scored an overall rating of 8.3. Additionally, the J.D. Power reliability score for the X3 was great at 81. In contrast, the XC60’s reliability score was average at 73 but still better than the Q5. Let’s look at other features that the BMW and Volvo models have that might be better options.
BMW X3
The basic BMW X3 sDrive30i starts at $43,700, which is about average for this class of vehicles. U.S. News raves about the handling and how much fun driving it is. The site notes that it gets good gas mileage and that the interior is pleasing, paired with user-friendly technology. The safety rating is 9.8 out of 10.
The BMW also has substantially more cargo space than the Audi Q5, with 28.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 62.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.
Volvo XC60
The entry-level Volvo XC60 Momentum has a starting price of $42,650. U.S. News loved the interior of the Volvo, calling it “sumptuous and first-rate.” However, the site frowned upon the infotainment system, saying it was “annoying to use.” The safety rating for this vehicle is also 9.8 out of 10.
Cargo space behind the rear seats is less roomy than the Audi Q5 at 22.4 cubic feet, but with the rear seats down, the area behind the front seats is 63.3 cubic feet, a larger space than the Q5 and X3.
