Don’t Buy the Ford F-150 SuperCrew

The Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle in America, and there are so many choices and trims to choose from. From Raptors to different choices of engines, the F-150 has something for everyone. But, MotorTrend says that of all those trims, the SuperCab is superior to the SuperCrew. Here’s why.

Big beds 

The SuperCrew and SuperCab are pretty similar. The main difference between the two is the fact that the SuperCrew has a larger rear-seating area. This could be a good idea if you’re buying a F-150 for regular day, family driving. But the SuperCab isn’t totally cramped in its rear section either. It has enough space back there to comfortably accommodate people, according to MotorTrend. But because the SuperCrew has a larger rear-seating area, it makes sacrifices in its utility, and that’s where the SuperCab begins to get ahead of the SuperCrew. 

Off the bat, because the SuperCab doesn’t have as much rear passenger space, its truck bed can be longer. MotorTrend says that a SuperCab comes with a standard bed that’s 6.5 feet long. In comparison, the SuperCrew’s standard bed is only 5.5 feet long, which is a full foot shorter than the SuperCab’s. You can upgrade the SuperCrew’s bed to be longer, but that’ll cost you.

If you’re serious about using your truck bed, Ford even offers an eight-foot long truck bed for the SuperCab. But due to its size, Ford won’t offer it for the SuperCrew. 

Great utility

That bigger bed is useful for a lot of things. Whether it’s carrying physically larger things or simply having more space to put those things, the size difference does matter. The difference is not in the size of the truck beds either. The SuperCab also gets a higher payload rating than the SuperCrew does.

MotorTrend says that the SuperCab’s payload rating is about 2,980 lb, which is 90 lb higher than what the SuperCrew can carry back there. But, the SuperCrew is significantly better at towing than the SuperCab is. The SuperCrew can haul around over 13,000 lb of cargo whereas the SuperCab can haul around about 12,000 lb of cargo.

That said, the SuperCab’s 12,000 lb towing capacity is nothing to scoff at and it’s good enough for most people and for most situations. There aren’t many situations where that 1,000 lb difference in towing capacity will matter. Besides, if you absolutely need as much towing capacity as possible, then there are heavier duty trucks to consider besides the F-150.

Price

Ultimately, when shopping for a vehicle, most consumers want to buy the truck that does what the consumer needs it to do at the cheapest price possible. When it comes down to that, the SuperCrew simply doesn’t provide anything significantly different from the SuperCab. The main difference is that the SuperCrew costs about $2,500 more than the SuperCab does, according to MotorTrend. And that’s just comparing the standard trims of each truck.

For the average family, the difference in rear legroom isn’t that significant, nor useful. The SuperCrew has 43.6 inches of rear legroom according to MotorTrend, compared to the 33.5 inches of rear legroom on the SuperCab. And again, the SuperCrew can haul over 1,000 lb more than the SuperCab can. 

But other than those two positives, the SuperCab is simply superior in every other category than the SuperCrew. And at a starting price tag of about $34,000, the SuperCab is a decently affordable trim of the F-150 to buy. The SuperCrew may be the more popular trim, according to MotorTrend, but there are not many good reasons why consumers shouldn’t buy the SuperCab instead.
