There’s no denying that the new Ford Ranger is a force to be reckoned with. It has advanced tech, a revamped interior, more power, and off-roading enhancements. But where is the more fuel-efficient Ford Ranger Hybrid?
Is the Ford Ranger Hybrid coming out?
Yes, there is a Ford Ranger Hybrid in the works, but it’s actually a plug-in hybrid vehicle or PHEV. So, that’s pretty exciting because it should be a true Toyota Tacoma hybrid rival and might beat the Jeep Gladiator 4xe to market. It’s slated for 2025.
Production of the Ranger PHEV will begin in 2024, so deliveries can occur early in 2025. But this timeline is subject to change due to supply chain issues, and rising inflation. Also, the Ford Ranger PHEV is for global markets, like Australia. It might not come to America just yet – if ever.
Here is where it gets a little weird. Reportedly, Ford CEO Jim Farley recently shared that Ford isn’t looking to add any more PHEVs to the lineup. So, America might have to wait for the more efficient Ranger as other markets get the electrified model.
It’s possible that America will get a simplified hybrid variant instead, but only time will tell. Also, this could leave the Jeep Gladiator 4xe as the only 2025 plug-in hybrid truck in the United States.
How much power does the Ranger PHEV have?
The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV pairs the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a battery pack. But Ford hasn’t released how much power this setup provides. But we do know that the Ranger PHEV can tow up to 7,700 lbs, like other Ranger models in the lineup.
That’s the standard Ranger engine in America. The gas-powered model cranks out 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The current most powerful engine option overseas is the available turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 engine with 247 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.
Ford may have left room for electric components with the standard gas engine, the available 2.7-liter V6 engine with 315 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, or the 3.0-liter V6 engine with 405 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Perhaps one of the more potent variants could be paired with a hybrid setup.
The Toyota Tacoma Hybrid pairs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to generate 326 hp and 465 b-ft of torque. We’re still waiting on the figures for the upcoming Jeep Gladiator 4xe.
How many MPG does the Ranger get?
The 2024 Ford Ranger gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. These figures are based on the 2023 model with the standard 2.3-liter engine. Also, adding 4×4 and various configurations may only get up to 21 mpg on the highway.
Official stats for the 2024 Ranger and the new engine options haven’t been released. The fuel economy figures haven’t been released for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma hybrid either.
The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV is targeting an all-electric range of up to 27 miles on a single charge. But its official fuel economy hasn’t been released.
The F-150 Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. With the 2.7-liter engine, it gets about 20 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway, so the hybrid has a small increase.
