Not everyone is looking to drive a sports car. However, some models are excruciatingly slow, frustrating even the tamest drivers. Unlike this faster SUV, the three vehicles bringing up the rear in speed may be an eye-opener.  

According to MotorTrend, the slowest vehicles of 2020 are small SUVs. This revelation is surprising, given that these models are marketed as sporty and swift. However, slow performance doesn’t necessarily mean these are bad choices.

MotorTrend puts vehicles through grueling road tests, and these SUVs were no different. It’s important to note that MotorTrend didn’t evaluate every car for the new model year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the publication’s evaluation base is quite large. 

So which SUV’s didn’t give drivers any thrills while behind the wheel this year? You may be shocked to learn that some popular models just didn’t make the cut in terms of speed. Let’s take a close look at three models that missed the mark in the speed department. Are they still worth a test drive? Let’s find out.

2020 Nissan Rogue Sport

You may be familiar with the extremely popular Nissan Rogue. However, it’s important to note that the Rogue Sport is a different SUV, and its name is a bit of a misnomer. This subcompact SUV is slower and weaker than its big brother. But it makes for a good commuter vehicle due to its excellent gas mileage and affordable price. 

MotorTrend drove the Rogue Sport SL, which turned in the third-slowest acceleration time of all the vehicles the publication tested this year. The 2020 Rogue Sport’s 141-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine crawled from 0-60 MPH in an excruciating 9.8 seconds.

Outlets such as Car and Driver have knocked the Rogue Sport for its noisy engine. However, there’s still a lot to like about this model. It achieves an EPA-estimated 28 MPG city/highway combined. Plus, it has one of the largest cargo holds in its class.

2020 Toyota C-HR

Toyota’s crossover displays a unique design and a decent list of standard safety systems. However, it’s tough to ignore the model’s shortcomings. The C-HR isn’t the slowest model on this list, but it may deliver the weakest overall package. 

MotorTrend evaluated the 2020 Toyota C-HR Limited, which is powered by a 144-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Despite having slightly higher power output than the Rogue Sport, it turned in a slower 0-60 MPH acceleration time. The 2020 C-HR accomplished the feat in a leisurely 10.2 seconds.

Those still interested in the C-HR may want to opt for a 2021 model instead. While it’s still a slow performer, it comes with some much-needed safety features.

2020 Nissan Kicks

MotorTrend’s slowest vehicle of 2020 is surprisingly a pretty decent model. The Kicks SR clocked an uninspiring 10.5-second 0-60 MPH acceleration time. However, there’s quite a bit to like about Nissan’s smallest SUV.

The 2020 Nissan Kicks’ 122-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is quite dull, but it delivers stellar gas mileage. The EPA estimates that drivers can achieve 33 MPG city/highway combined. 

The little SUV is also big on cargo space and standard safety features. Plus, the Kicks has an ultra-affordable starting MSRP of just $19,070.

Sometimes slow and steady can still win the race

A swift ride may not be at the top of your list for needs in a vehicle, and no one wants to lag behind. While not all SUV’s are known for their prowess in speed, these models certainly didn’t do drivers any favors. 

It’s safe to say that frustratingly prolonged acceleration can incredibly hamper the driving experience. However, if you’re a Sunday driver, then the Rogue Sport, C-HR, or Kicks might still be an adequate choice for you. Just because a vehicle isn’t the fastest doesn’t mean it’s the worst choice out there. These models still have a lot to offer buyers if you don’t have a need for speed.
