Don’t Use Your Ford Mustang Mach-E for Towing
We’re providing you with an odd warning that’s also fair. Don’t use your Ford Mustang Mach-E for towing. Both the 2021 and 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E models haven’t been rated for towing despite being available with a tow hitch.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t rated for towing
We’re still dipping our toes in the water when it comes to electric vehicles in America. While the Rivian R1T can tow up to 11,000 lbs and the Ford F-150 Lightning can tow up to 10,000 lbs, we aren’t sure about SUVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
But the Mustang Mach-E is available with a tow hitch despite not being approved for towing. According to Ford Authority, the Mach-E’s manual states that the vehicle is not approved for trailer towing. Never tow a trailer.
Why isn’t the Mach-E rated for towing?
There is an aftermarket company known as Torklift Central that sells a hitch for the Ford Mustang Mach-E. According to the seller, the hitch is rated for 525 lbs of tongue weight at the trailer ball and allows the Mach-E to tow up to 3,500 lbs.
But keep in mind that this is an aftermarket solution, and it’s not endorsed by Ford. Torklift also warns that your vehicle may have a lower tow rating than the trailer hitch. If your vehicle has a lower tow rating than the rating on the Torklift Central rating, then your hitch capacity is limited.
However, the Mach-E doesn’t have a tow rating. The Ford Mustang Mach-E may have been put through SAE testing to determine maximum tow ratings. The series of tests determine how much weight a truck or SUV can handle.
The tests involve hauling a fully loaded trailer up a steep grade, braking, acceleration, and control. It also includes towing large loads at high highway speeds.
We can only assume that the 2021 Mustang Mach-E was placed in these tests or at least experienced a few simulation tests to determine that they can’t recommend a maximum tow rating. It may compromise vehicle safety.
But in the UK, the Mustang Mach-E can tow up to 1,653 lbs. The Mustang Mach-E has a tow rating across the pound because they have different standards when it comes to determining max tow ratings.
Towing the United States is a bit more dangerous than in the UK because we tend to travel at higher speeds. Towing standards limit how much weight can be towed before it becomes unsafe.
Can you tow with the Mustang Mach-E?
Technically, you can tow with the Ford Mustang Mach-E. But you will be doing so at your own risk. Ford protects itself by not approving a tow limit. This means that if an accident occurs, you may be held legally negligent.
Causing an accident while towing beyond a manufacturer’s requirements may put you at risk of facing legal actions based on driver negligence. So, we don’t recommend putting yourself and others in potential danger.
The Telsa Model Y has an advantage with an available tow package that allows it to tow up to 3,500 lbs. Perhaps this will inspire the Ford Mustang Mach-E to be released in America with a tow rating soon.
