Downgraded 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Won’t Have V6 or V8 Engines
Since its introduction stateside in the early 1990s, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been an American auto industry mainstay. The top-selling luxury compact has offered high style and performance. And the automaker recently unveiled the model’s latest iteration. But it has consumers and industry analysts perplexed.
For the first time, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class won’t be available with a V6 or V8 engine. It’s a huge change for the German automaker, leaving consumers wondering what it means for the C-Class and the brand’s future.
A bold move for Mercedes-Benz
Ditching the V6 and V8 is a definite downgrade for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Based on early released prototype designs, the new vehicle will be available with only a four-cylinder engine.
Car and Driver reported that “every new C-Class will be fitted with the company’s homemade (and excellent) nine-speed automatic transmission.” Apparently, the car will no longer offer the optional manual transmission stateside, a big loss for auto enthusiasts.
Known for its luxurious vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is also synonymous with performance. Getting rid of the V6 and V8 has left many industry analysts scratching their heads. Though the C-Class will offer new hybrid powertrain options, they might not be enough to attract enthusiasts who love a powerful V8’s roar.
Performance options for the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-class
Discussing the absence of powerful engines, HotCars was quick to point out “it was inevitable considering how the industry is favoring a sustainable approach.” It acknowledged that although the change was unimpressive, “Mercedes knows a thing or two about engines and automobiles in general, [so] we expect them to deliver the best.”
Mercedes-Benz has not yet revealed full details about the new C-Class, but there’s speculation that the United States will receive the C300 sedan first and then the AMG versions. The AMG C63 hybrid will likely be the most powerful car in the lineup, pushing 500 hp. There’s also talk of a plug-in hybrid based on the diesel and gas variants in the top trim level. A 48-volt mild-hybrid will likely power the other eco-friendly models.
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class will be the first W-206 generation to replace the successful W-205 that has been in production since 2014. It will mark the C-Class’s sixth generation. Though returning to its W-201 roots with the four-cylinder engines, the new C-Class likely won’t see a six-cylinder again.
The new C-Class caters to these consumers
Despite the V6 and V8 loss, there’s still reason to celebrate the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class’s arrival. A center-console infotainment system with an enormous touchscreen and digital instrumentation will impress. A premium Burmester audio system offers premium sound quality for drivers unafraid to invest in quality.
Over-the-air updates, an improved head-up system, and adjustable dampers are a few of the features Mercedes-Benz has included in the C-Class. Engineered with city drivers in mind, the all-new C-Class will have rear-axle steering for the first time. Not only will stability at high speeds be steadier, but the maneuvering and handling in start-and-go traffic will also be second to none. The daily commute just got a whole lot more enjoyable.
New C300 and C300 4Matic C-Class sedans could arrive at dealerships as soon as early next year, Car and Driver reported.
