Drag Race: Tesla Model S Plaid vs McLaren 765 LT
A good drag race is probably one of the best sales tools for electric vehicles. Their instant torque and direct transmissions make high-end EVs nearly unbeatable on a drag strip. One of the EV kings of drag racing is the Tesla Model S Plaid. Tesla’s newest luxury sedan can accelerate at a tremendous rate and is almost unbeatable.
Exotic cars are likely the only gasoline-powered vehicles that would ever stand a chance against a high-performance electric car in a drag race. The YouTube channel DragTimes pit a Tesla Model S Plaid against a McLaren 765 LT to put that theory to the test. Can the UK supercar dethrone the Tesla Plaid?
Let’s take a closer look at the opponents.
Tesla Model S Plaid
We’ve covered the Tesla Plaid quite a bit on MotorBiscuit. It is easily one of the most talked-about EVs currently available on the market. The Tesla Model S Plaid has three electric motors that combine for 1,020 horsepower. Despite the Model S Plaid weighing north of 4,000 lbs, it has a 0 to 60 mph time of under 2 seconds (in particular conditions). The powerful acceleration of the Model S Plaid makes it a tough car to defeat in a drag race.
Though, Donut Media recently explored why the Tesla Plaid is so fast and how there are a few different ways to actually beat the Model S Plaid in a drag race. In all the drag race videos we’ve watched involving the Model S Plaid, we have only seen the EV lose to one car: the Rimac Nevera. Unfortunately, the Nevera has a price tag that is well over 2 million dollars, so it isn’t exactly the most accessible method for taking down a Model S Plaid.
Is a gasoline-powered supercar really up to the task?
McLaren 765 LT
The McLaren 765 LT currently sits at the top of McLaren’s supercar line. Coming from the factory with a twin-turbo V8, this McLaren is supposed to have 765 horsepower hence its name. However, according to a dyno session, the DragTimes Host’s personal McLaren 765LT estimates that his car actually makes about 850 horsepower. Before the Telsa Model S Plaid came along, his McLaren 765 LT was the fastest car he’s ever driven down the quarter-mile.
In stock trim on stock Pirelli Tires and on Toyo tires, his McLaren 765 LT could complete a quarter-mile in 9.3 seconds on a prepared drag strip. That is very fast for a car with no modifications at all. There seems to be an excellent chance that this McLaren may just have what it takes to take down the Goliath that is the Model S Plaid.
Drag Race: Tesla Model S Plaid vs. McLaren 765 LT
As previously mentioned, the DragTimes McLaren 765 LT can manage a quarter-mile time of 9.3 seconds. However, Tesla claims that the Model S Plaid can do a quarter-mile in 9.2 seconds. Assuming that Tesla isn’t fudging their numbers, the Model S Plaid has the advantage.
DragTimes wants to be as fair as possible in this matchup, so both cars are racing each other in 100% stock form exactly how they came from the factory. Make your predictions, and then watch it all unfold in the video above. You might just be surprised.
