If you can’t keep up with all of the new auto startups centered around electric vehicles, you may want to stop reading because here’s another one. The latest electric kid on the block is Drako Motors. Their car is a four-motor electric monster built around the bones of the Fisker Karma. Remember Fisker? That was the company that barely eked out 1,800 cars over five or so years before bankruptcy swallowed them whole. We hope for better results for Drako’s sake.

Big Claims

Quite spectacular claims for the Drako GTE include 1,200 hp, with a price tag of $1.25 million. The first production GTE was shown at Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach last week. Here’s what Drako has to say about their first GTE, “It’s a four-passenger ultra-luxury supercar with cornering precision unlike any other supercar on the road today.” 

The claimed power and cornering are achieved by a quad-motor system with an electric motor at each wheel. Combined with torque vectoring that is aided by “industry leading algorithms,” if this is all true it should be a fun ride. 

Looks Somewhat Familiar

If you think you’ve seen this car before, that’s because it borrows heavily from the former Fisker Karma, now called the Karma Revero. It appears that all inner structure is a product of the Karma. Also, the doors and rear quarters appear the same. The fascia, hood, and front fenders look to be unique adaptations to the Karma’s bones. The rear is a similar setup with just soft bumper and taillight changes to the original Karma from whence it came. It has integrated a nice spoiler into the existing design, too, which helps separate it from its Karma brethren.

Though the front-fascia is a bit more conventional than the original Karma’s face, the Drako GTE has a better look in our humble opinion.

They told a crowd at the Monterey Car Week festivities that they have been working on a prototype since 2015, when they flew a prototype around the Nurburgring. The two founders are said to be technology veterans and not part of the automotive intelligencia. 

Besides the sourced Karma bodies, Drako also taps into the vast automotive aftermarket utilizing Brembo brakes and Ohlins suspension bits. 

206 mph

Drako says top speed for the GTE will be 206 mph and that it will be up for track competition. They say the car starts with an “internally-massive parallel cooling architecture” that protects the batteries from heat. 

While we wait on similar claims from electric supercar manufacturers like Byton and Faraday Future to be fulfilled, Drako claims it will be cranking out GTEs in 2020 to possibly snap up those waiting on the aforementioned EV ventures. 

We should also mention that the Fisker Karma, its tooling and intellectual properties were sold to a Chinese parts supplier called the Wanxiang Group, and now manufactures the all-electric Karma Revero with headquarters in Irvine, California. They have also debuted a completely new concept called the SC1 Vision at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. It is a speedster-like car with scissors doors similar to McLaren. It is also all-electric. No production plans have been announced.
