The 2022 Ford Bronco is one of the best SUVs you can currently buy if you need an SUV to take you on your daily errands and off the beaten path. And while it’s plenty capable off-road, there are some places that the Bronco can’t go. In that case, you’ll need the new Ford Bronco Raptor, which can go just about anywhere.

I spent a week in the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor. And while I couldn’t take it on the tumultuous dirt roads on the Baja or through some crazy sand dunes, I was able to drive it up a snowy mountain to see how it would do.

How does the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor handle the snow?

As you can imagine, the 2022 Ford Bronco Raptor handles the snow and steep mountain roads with incredible ease. Its massive BF Goodrich 37-inch tires have plenty of grip, although I quickly learned to put it into “4-High” when the going got a little rough. The normal setting is a rear-drive configuration, and the back end would step out when I hit the throttle.

Of course, the lack of traction was partly due to the enormous power this thing puts out. Under its hood is a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6 engine that puts out 418 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque.

According to Car and Driver, that power should be good enough to get the Bronco Raptor moving up to 60 mph from stop in around 5.6 seconds. But out in the wilderness roads of Colorado, Mother Nature doesn’t care about performance times – only traction.

Fortunately, gaining traction was easy with the twist of the G.O.A.T (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) knob on the center console. There are seven different drive modes to choose from, but I found that the “Off Road” setting was the best one for traversing the snowy mountain I was on.

After reaching the top, I made my descent. Fortunately, the Trail One-Pedal Driving feature kicked in and made going back down the snowy mountain a breeze. According to Ford, this feature allows the driver to speed the car up or slow it down just by pressing or releasing the accelerator pedal. When the accelerator is released, a steady amount of brake pressure is applied, and the system can slow the car to a stop.

How comfortable is the Ford Bronco Raptor?

Overall, the Ford Bronco Raptor is a comfortable vehicle to drive. The front seats provide a large amount of bolstering without feeling too lumpy. The cabin is also very spacious upfront, and the rear-seat occupants have plenty of leg and headroom. They even have their own USB and 110-volt chargers back there.

Considering the Bronco Raptor is shaped like a box, the visibility out of the front and side windows are good. But the rear visibility is hindered by the massive spare tire hanging on the tailgate. I kept having to use the side mirrors to see the car behind me. It’s a little annoying, but it works.

Otherwise, the car’s heated seats and heated steering make driving in the cold a much warmer affair. One neat feature is that the car remembers what your settings were when you last drove it, so there’s no need to push a bunch of buttons to condition the cabin to your liking every time.

The steering wheel also feels good in the hands, and its effort can be tailored to your driving needs. I personally like a more weighted feel, so I set it into “Sport” mode most of the time. However, the “Comfort” mode works well for slower driving situations – like in parking lots.

The Ford Bronco is fun to drive anywhere

Despite the fact that the 2022 Ford Bronco costs a hefty sum – around $80,000 – I will say that it’s a blast to drive whether you’re tooling around down or charging up a mountain. Truth be told, a lower trim level like the Bronco Badlands can easily take you to 80% of the places you want to go on this planet.

But if you really want to explore that other 19% or so, then there’s no denying that the Ford Bronco Raptor can take you there.
