Driven: The Hyundai Tucson Has Advantages Over the Toyota RAV4
Be sure to wave at us on the highway as we test more vehicles, such as the Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4. Now we’re providing real-world comparisons and found that the 2022 Hyundai Tucson has some notable advantages over the 2022 Toyota RAV4.
2022 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2022 Toyota RAV4
We will start with pricing! The 2022 Hyundai Tucson starts at $24,950, and the top-spec Limited trim brings the price up to $35,300. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 starts at $26,975, and the TRD Off-Road trim brings the cost up to $36,915.
Both SUVs have unique advantages to consider. For example, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road trim can conquer the wilds better than the Tucson XRT model. The Tucson has a spacious interior, while the RAV4 provides plenty of cargo space.
The Toyota RAV4 is the most popular selling SUV for excellent reasons. However, don’t sleep on the Tucson. It puts up a real fight.
The Tucson is sportier
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson has a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8.4 seconds. This is a bit below average but fine for passing others on the highway.
With the 2022 Toyota RAV4, you get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. According to Edmunds, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 9.1 seconds. Neither SUV is a speed demon.
Edmunds shared that the Tucson has an ultra-smooth suspension to provide one the best rides in the class. It also features a quiet interior that keeps wind and road noise and bay. It has direct steering too.
The RAV4 is a little bumpy and louder at highway speeds. When you accelerate, sometimes the engine sounds coarse. The steering can be a bit vague, but the RAV4 corners well, and the off-roading suspension performs better.
Also, the seats in the Tucson offer more adjustment possibilities, more lumber support, and are well-padded. Taller drivers may want more space in the RAV4, plus the seat pads are a little stiff.
But the RAV4 gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and up to 34 mpg on the highway. The Tucson gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway.
The Tucson has better features
Both the 2022 Hyundai Tucson and 2022 Toyota RAV4 have attractive interiors and advanced tech. However, the Tucson feels a bit more upscale with more soft touch-covered surfaces and textured surfaces.
The Tucson has a 10.3-inch touchscreen with crisp graphics. The RAV4 has an 8.0-inch system that looks a little blurry and dated. You can add a wireless phone charger and surround-view camera to both models.
Also, we found that the Bose system in the Tucson has a better sound quality than the JBL system in the RAV4. But the JBL system does an excellent job of covering road noise.
The RAV4 has a better towing capacity, fuel economy, and more off-roading chops. But the Tucson advances with a more comfortable ride, enhanced tech, and higher quality interior.
