When you ask the internet how to deal with a roadblock checkpoint, everyone’s got an opinion. There are viral videos of drivers shouting about their rights, only to end up talking to the cops anyway (ironic, right?). But Attorney Andrew Flusche recently reviewed a video of a driver who handled a police checkpoint like an absolute champ.

Jesse Bright, an attorney himself, had the ultimate smooth move at a North Carolina highway checkpoint. While waiting in line, Bright starts recording, explaining that DWI checkpoints are unconstitutional in his state. He knew the officers were only checking for a valid license and registration. But his approach? Pure genius.

Bright admitted waiting in line was tough, but the hardest part was staying quiet. “You feel rude, but you’re exercising your rights,” he said. And that’s the trick: keep quiet, and you don’t give them any reason to detain you.

Flusche added some helpful insight, noting that the more you talk, the more “evidence” officers might claim to have—whether it’s your speech or a “sniff test” of alcohol. Anything they can use to justify “probable cause.” But Bright wasn’t having it. He cracked his window, handed over his documents, and stayed silent when officers asked where he was going. His reward? A polite “Have a good night, sir” as they sent him on his way.

Flusche gave Bright a perfect five out of five for how he handled the situation, avoiding any unnecessary drama. His only tip? If an officer requests something reasonable—like rolling down your window—just do it.

So, next time you’re at a checkpoint, channel your inner Jesse Bright, stay cool, stay quiet, and drive on. You can see Flusche’s full video guide on handling checkpoints embedded below:
