Drunk driving is an especially selfish crime because it not only puts you at risk, but endangers the safety of every other driver, passenger, and pedestrian on the road. So I suppose it’s not too shocking that a drunk driver decided everyone else on the road was going the wrong way.

That’s right: An alleged drunk driver hopped on Nebraska’s Highway 77 in his Subaru late one night. He was shocked when a vehicle whizzed by in the “wrong” direction.

A sober driver might have questioned if he was doing something wrong. But this suspect–with a BAC over .16%–took a different strategy. He dialed 911 (after trying 119 and getting no answer) to report someone on the wrong side of the highway.

On the phone with dispatchers, he didn’t spare any details about the car going the “wrong” way. “He had his brights on, man. He almost ran me off the road…That was gnarly. That was like, a lot.”

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded to the man’s report, dispatching an officer to Highway 77 to stop the mysterious car going the wrong way. Imagine the deputy’s surprise when the mysterious driver was none other than the good samaritan who’d called in with the report.

In recently released footage you can see the officer flip on his lights and the alleged drunk driver stop his silver Subaru sedan immediately. When the officer asks, “Do you know why I stopped you?” the driver admits his wrongdoing.

“Yeah, because I was on the wrong side of the road…I must’ve missed an exit.”

The deputy asked whether the driver had recently called 911.

“Yep, because I thought someone was on the wrong side of the f—— road, bro.”

The officer finished the story, “But it turned out it was you?”

That’s when the suspect admitted, “Yep, like a dumb f–k.”

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office was happy to report that the story could have ended much worse. “As the video depicts, we’re fortunate no one was seriously injured before this driver could be removed from the road.”
