Join us and the 2022 Dodge Durango for a moment of silence. We have to say goodbye to the Dodge Durango’s Hellcat engine. The top-of-the-line Durango SRT Hellcat will not be available for 2022. It might not be back for 2023 either.

While we’re happy to see the 2022 Dodge Durango survive, we’re sad to see the Hellcat engine go. The Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat won’t be available this year. The 2021 model marks the temporary end of the supercharged three-row SUV.

But on a positive note, rumors about the Durango being dead are false. Recently, Stellantis announced that the Durango will be remodeled for 2024. This means that the Hellcat engine could return.

Why is the Durango losing the Hellcat?

The Dodge Durango’s famous 6.2-liter V8 Hellcat engine fails to meet the new emission standards for 2022. The engine fails to comply with evaporative emissions in an SUV. But it does meet the standards for Dodge muscle cars, at least. So this engine won’t go away entirely yet.

In the 2021 Durango, the Hellcat engine pumps out 707 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.9 seconds. It’s a little faster than the Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat models.

The MSRP for the Durango Hellcat is $80,995. But you might be able to find a used option with a lower price. Plus, shopping for a used Durango Hellcat is the only way to get one. The 2021 models are sold out.

But there might be a new Dodge Durango Hellcat SRT model later. Stellantis could be working on a new engine that meets emission standards. They have plenty of time to whip something up by 2024.

Plus, the Durango will go electric. An electric SUV could easily be faster than the gasoline-powered Hellcat model. The first electric Dodge will arrive in 2024. We just don’t know which model it will be. It could be the Challenger, Charger, Durango, or something completely new.

How much power does the 2022 Durango have?

The 2022 Dodge Durango is available with three engine options:

  • The standard 3.6-liter V6 engine pumps out 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 5.7-liter V8 engine provides best-in-class 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.
  • The 6.4-liter V8 engine cranks out 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

When properly equipped, the Dodge Durango can tow up to 8,700 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,924 lbs. This is an excellent amount of power for hauling larger trailers, campers, and boats. But the Durango is a little thirsty. It gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway.

With the V6 engine, the Durango can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.4 seconds. So, both of the V8 engines are faster. This might not be Hellcat fast, but it’s impressive for a three-row SUV.

You can get started in a 2022 Durango for about $35,475. Despite not having Hellcat power, the Durango still has enough muscle to get the job done.
