How Edmunds Ranks the Current Crop of Heavy-Duty Trucks
We’re often sharing the latest reviews and industry pointers about new cars. However, let’s not forget trucks. More specifically, there’s quite a bit of feedback out there right now about heavy-duty trucks.
Heavy-duty trucks aren’t just nice-looking behemoths. They’re workhorses, usually put to heavy-duty use by those who drive them. From commercial construction sites to rural farms, the heavy-duty truck continues to evolve, innovate, and improve, just like new cars do. Edmunds has started ranking the latest class of heavy-duty trucks. Here’s how those that have been rated are already fairing.
Edmunds reviewed 3 heavy-duty pickup trucks so far
There are some pretty beefy heavy-duty trucks in the 2023 class. So, if you need a robust heavy hauler, you’ll have a decent selection from which to choose. Edmunds has begun to evaluate these big pickups, test-driving and reviewing what each has to offer. So far, the results are in for three of these models.
The Ram 2500, the Ford F-250 Super Duty, and the GMC Sierra 2500HD all have official scores from Edmunds. Edmunds’ evaluators spent quality time with each on their in-house test track and across a 115-mile stretch of city street driving. The team also drives these trucks home with them for a daily-driver experience.
For now, the three heavy-duty trucks are rated in that previously listed order. The final scores include 30+ different individual categories, including performance, technology, comfort, value, and utility. The Ram 2500 comes in first, with its powerful engine options and well-mannered driving dynamics. The Ford F-250 Super Duty comes in second as a smooth-driving and competent tow-haul partner. The GMC Sierra 2500HD comes in third, with its highly-capable prowess and a slew of extras.
There are still a few contenders to be rated
Don’t worry if you don’t see your favorite heavy-duty trucks on the Edmunds ranking list. Not all of the contenders have been officially evaluated just yet. So, look for other beefy trucks in this class that might take the lead.
The 2023 Ram 3500 outperforms its 2500 sibling in towing and payload. The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is another option, introducing a redesign and more power this year. The 2023 Ford F-350 Super Duty brings more towing and hauling capacities than its 2500 Super Duty sibling. Similarly, the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500HD might be worth a look, too, if you like the Sierra but need more muscle.
Chevy’s Silverado 3500HD is one of the biggest models in the heavy-duty segment. So, be watching for those reviews to land soon, too. Additionally, Pickup Truck News says you might get excited about the 2023 Nissan Titan XD, which has been confirmed as a heavy-duty option but with all the plush and thrills of the smaller Titan. Furthermore, don’t forget the 2023 Ram 2500 Power Wagon, with its off-road chops, is anticipated to be a stunner.
No heavy-duty truck earned higher than an 8.0 score
Considering there’s still so much about this truck segment that isn’t known or officially rated, there is one thing worth recognizing. None of the three heavy-duty trucks that Edmunds rated scored above an 8.0 out of 10. The Ram 2500 earns a 7.9. The second place Ford F-250 Super Duty earns a 7.7. The GMC Sierra 2500HD scores 7.5. However, it could just mean plenty of room for other heavy-duty pickup contestants to advance in the rankings.
