This is what actually happens when a car gets egged [Watch]
It might strike you as a harmless prank. After all, eggs are totally organic material. In reality, raw egg causes incredible damage to clear coat and paint. To demonstrate, a ceramic coating and detail service based in Auburn, Washington, just posted a reel showing exactly how quickly egging a car will leave the owner with a seriously steep repair bill.
Dirty2Dreamy Ceramic Coating and Paint Protection Film says that an egg doesn’t need to sit on a car’s surface for any given amount of time to permanently damage the clear coat. In other words, the damage from egging a car is immediate on contact.
The shells cause “tick” marks that often nick through the clear coat and down into the paint layer. The effect is called “shattered clear.”
What’s more, the interior of the egg contains an acid that absorbs into the clear coat straight away. Egging a car softens the clear almost instantly and creates a cloudy, unappealing smudge effect.
Unfortunately, panels hit with eggs aren’t refinishable. Sanding the area revealed the tick marks remaining in the paint. To restore the hood, the panel would need to be fully repainted. As such, depending on the number of panels hit with eggs, the car’s owner could be left with literally thousands of dollars in damage.
To anyone considering egging a car, know that the driver can’t just take it to the car wash.
