For better or for worse, automakers take plenty of risks when it comes to exterior design. Sometimes the funky styling pays off, and other times it just doesn’t. We’ve gathered a few of the ugliest cars ever made over the last 50 years, most of which are no longer in production.

The Pontiac Aztek

The General Motors Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover that was in production from 2000 to 2005. This vehicle was known for its versatile cargo configurations like an inflatable mattress/tent option that allowed the vehicle to function as a camper which is actually pretty cool for impromptu picnics or tailgates. In pop culture, it’s referenced as the “ugly tent car” and what Walter White drove in Breaking Bad.

The PT Cruiser

The PT Cruiser was produced by Chrysler from 2001 to 2010. This hatchback was extremely popular during the time of its production even with its less than stellar safety rating. The PT Cruiser had a slight edge to it but it was generally unattractive and the wood-trim models really took it over the edge.

The AMC Gremlin

Clearly, the Gremlin lived up to its name. It was produced by the defunct American Motors Corporation which is now known as FCA Chrysler. This subcompact car was sold as a two-door model in both the U.S. and Mexico and was intended to compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Beetle and the Toyota Corolla. The Gremlin was in production from 1970 to 1978 before it transitioned to the slightly more appealing AMC Spirit. 

The Corbin Sparrow

The Corbin Sparrow, now known as the Myers Motors NmG looks like some sort of distorted object from the dimensions of Alice in Wonderland. This battery-electric vehicle could only hold a single passenger and came on three wheels. The Corbin Sparrow came in two body styles: the two-door coupe nicknamed Pizza Butt and the one-door option known as the Jelly Bean.

The Nissan Cube

The Nissan Cube is celebrated by fans for its reliability and good gas mileage.  Dependability and fuel efficiency are great aspects of a car but many consumers were unable to get past the Cube’s odd styling, which is reminiscent of a large block of swiss cheese. Nissan ceased production of the subcompact car back in 2014 and recently suspended its production of the model in Japan back in 2019.

The Aston Martin Cygnet

The Cygnet was Aston Martin’s attempt at “luxury urban mobility” but the model just ended up looking like a squashed, knockoff version of the Fiat 500.  The Cygnet was intended for city cruising and short-haul trips. The teeny car was produced at the Aston Martin Gaydon headquarters in the UK from 2011 to 2013.

The Bentley Bentayga

The 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid has some appealing attributes like a 443-horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque that achieves a top speed of 190 mph. It also has a gorgeous interior completed with fine embroidery and diamond-quilted seats. Conversely, this plugin hybrid’s exterior has a horrible sexy-meets-hearse kind of a vibe.
