If you think of crossovers as just station wagons with a new name, then wagons are super popular right now. Alas, real wagons; those that are based on a sedan body and don’t require a step to hike into, are not a popular body style these days. But, as Autowise recently pointed out, there are still a few to choose from, even though the choice is getting smaller every year. Here are eight wagons you will still be able to buy in 2020:

1. Subaru Outback

Based on the Legacy sedan the Outback is completely new for 2020. This is Subaru’s best-selling model with sales of 180,000 for the last three years. It can be ordered with either the standard 2.5-liter flat-four with 182 hp, or a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 260 hp.

2. Audi A4 Allroad

For 2020 the A4 Allroad receives a nice makeover with adaptive dampers as standard equipment. The Quattro system engages all-wheel-drive when it detects the need, otherwise, the Allroad remains in front-wheel-drive mode. Power is from a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 252 hp and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. 

3. Audi RS6 Avant Wagon

The US has not been blessed with the RS6 Avant before, so this will be a new experience many look forward to. With a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and a whopping 591 hp, 0-to-sixty times are 3.6 seconds. A 48-volt hybrid system adds wallop. Quattro all-wheel-drive comes with an eight-speed automatic with 40:60 torque split. All hail the RS6 Avant!

4. Volvo V60 and V60 Cross Country

Volvo is known for its wagons, and it offers them in two varieties. The V60 is your standard wagon, while the V60 Cross Country features 2.9 inches of extra ground clearance along with some suspension and chassis enhancements. There is also an Off-Road driving mode and all-wheel-drive. Power is from a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder producing 250 hp. The T6 option gets you an added supercharger and the T8 adds an electric motor.

5. Mercedes E-Class

Available in the standard or high-performance AMG E 63s version, the price is a large $107,000. Power is from a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 362 hp, while the AMG E 63 S gets the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Zero-to-sixty times are 3.4-seconds for this 4,700-lb long roof.

6. Buick Regal TourX

The only American station wagon sold, it’s a Buick built in Germany as Opel’s Insignia Country Tourer. With good German quality but meh driving dynamics, it is affordable and used versions with under 5,000 miles (program cars??) sell in the LA area for around $20,000, or new at $29,000. The only powertrain available is the 2.0-liter turbo LTG four-cylinder pushing 250 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. One advantage to a 2020 model is the new nine-speed automatic replacing the issue-plagued eight-speed. No, it’s not an A4 Allroad, but it’s also not $45,000.

7. Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo

Sold in very limited numbers the Panamera Sport Turismo is not especially efficient as a wagon, and at around $100,000 isn’t cheap. But Porsche says it makes the Sport Turismo for existing customers wanting a different Panamera experience. It says customers want performance and excellent driving dynamics. From a 3.0-liter turbo V6 to a hybrid twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor putting out 680 hp the Sport Turismo is definitely performance and dynamics wrapped around a Panamera wagon.

8. Jaguar XF and XFS Sportbrake

The XF is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 296 hp and the premium XFS comes with the supercharged V6 pumping 380hp. Both feature all-wheel-drive. Besides adaptive and configurable dynamics the 2020 XFS comes with lane keep assist and also driver condition monitor, as well as a $71,800 list price.
