Dodge has teased the arrival of a new era with the fuzzy yet dramatic glimpses of its upcoming EV. However, the automaker finally delivered on its big claims. The new Dodge Charger Daytona SRT EV is an electric coupe with angular stylistic nods to its retro predecessors. Here’s what we know about Dodge’s new electric muscle car and its Banshee heart: oh, it also sounds unlike anything else on the market.

What is special about the new Charger Daytona SRT EV?

Dodge’s teasers for the sinister-looking EV “eMuscle” probably prompted a few sighs of relief from die-hard Mopar fans who are accustomed to the retro styling of the venerable Dodge Challenger. The automaker’s CEO and champion of the outgoing supercharged Hellcats, Tim Kuniskis, believes that the new EV had a unique challenge. Specifically, muscle car enthusiasts want thunderous pantomime and a nostalgic nod to the culture that EVs don’t have.

So Kuniskis and the engineers at Dodge imbued the Charger Daytona SRT EV with a multispeed transmission. Better yet, Kuniskis said that the car needs the “sound and the experience.” That’s right; it makes a sound.   

Does an electric muscle car make a sound?

It’s tricky to reconcile the words “electric” and “sound” when talking about vehicles. However,  Dodge engineered the upcoming Charger Daytona SRT EV to produce an exhaust note as well as auditory feedback for shifting and the experience that muscle car fans expect. According to MotorTrend, the upcoming Daytona features “Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust.” The system channels air back to an amplifier and tuning chamber, creating the sound of the next-generation muscle car. 

To match the intriguing new soundtrack, Dodge will use an 800-volt Banshee propulsion system, all-wheel drive (AWD), and likely a 400-volt system for the lower trims. Even more tantalizing, MotorTrend says the Banshee namesake and logo will grace the marque’s top-performing EVs.  

Will the Dodge electric muscle car be fast?

In addition to the 800-volt Banshee propulsion system, the upcoming EV promises to smash previous performance benchmarks. First, customers can opt for warranty-covered power levels Dodge designed to upgrade the upcoming electric muscle car at the time of purchase or later. Next, Dodge has a new “PowerShot” feature which promises an additional 25 horsepower push-to-pass function. Drivers can use the PowerShot to blast around other vehicles, characteristic of its muscle car lineage.  

When will the new Dodge electric muscle car go on sale?

The Dodge electric muscle car isn’t a distant fantasy. According to Car and Driver, Dodge could field a production version of the Daytona SRT EV as early as 2024. It’s unclear how much of the handsome Greys of Thunder paint-clad concept will make the final cut. However, if the production model includes any of the subtle aero, unique sound, or flush door handles of the concept, Charger and Challenger fans can celebrate the electric age rather than curse its arrival.
