Electrify America announced a new initiative to reduce wait times at its EV charging stations. The pilot program enforces an 85% State of Charge (SOC) limit at select high-traffic locations. Once a vehicle reaches 85% SOC, the charging session will automatically end. After that, drivers have a 10-minute grace period to move their vehicle before incurring idle fees.

EA developed the Congestion Reduction Pilot in response to customer feedback. It launched early this month. The company says it will closely monitor station performance and customer sentiment. The pilot aims to ensure drivers can access chargers without long waits.

The pilot covers 10 stations in southern California. Locations include Plaza Del Sol in Burbank, Target in Carson, Ralphs in Glendale, and several other high-use areas. Similar measures are already in place in Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Even if chargers are empty, the 85% SOC cap remains to maintain efficiency and reduce wait times. Electrify America says the program is a temporary measure, starting in early July 2024, with ongoing evaluation based on customer feedback and station performance. EA will inform drivers if the pilot expands to more locations.

For those needing to charge beyond 85%, Electrify America suggests planning trips accordingly and using other stations outside the pilot. Customers are encouraged to check the EA mobile app or website for nearby stations that aren’t part of the program. EA says the initiative is all part of a broader strategy that includes ultimately increasing the number of charging stations across the country.
