The Blue Oval is known for making reliable, popular vehicles. The Ford Escape has proven itself to be no exception to this rule. But that hasn’t always been the case. Though it seems to have recently redeemed itself, the 2020 Escape had a challenging year. Let’s take a look at the good news concerning Ford’s compact crossover SUV.

But first, why did the Ford Escape have such a bad 2020?

2020 wasn’t a good year for new car sales. Showrooms shut down, and steady incomes became shaky at best. So used cars sold well, but new models struggled. Though that certainly wasn’t great news for automakers, it gave consumers more leverage. That might’ve also negatively affected the Ford Escape due to its nearly 30,000 price point. However, the tides may be turning for this compact crossover SUV.

Sporty and affordable

The 2020 Ford Escape recently made U.S. News‘ list of the sportiest SUVs under $30,000 in 2021. Not only that, but the Escape also ranks in the top 5 of the 14 selected models.

Competing against SUVs such as the Jeep Cherokee, Kia Soul, Toyota RAV4, and Mini Cooper Countryman, the Escape makes an impressive showing. According to U.S. News, its car rankings are based on respected published reviews from automobile critics and important data from third-party sources. Making this list is good news for the 2020 Ford Escape.

What’s great about the 2020 Ford Escape

First of all, the Ford Escape starts at under $30,000. The base MSRP is $24,885, with a U.S. News performance score of 7.9 out of 10 and an overall score of 8.2. This Escape model year is completely redesigned and leaps and bounds better than the previous version. It’s more upscale, roomier, and overall much more fun to drive. Plus, it comes with more technology features.

But if you’re looking to pay less than $30,000, you’ll have to buy the base powertrain option: a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder. However, it’s a relatively powerful and speedy option, making 181 horsepower. It’s a sporty, zippy, and affordable choice.

Here’s what else you should know

Car and Driver believes the 2020 Ford Escape is far superior to other models and much sportier. It sits a bit lower and lighter-weight than prior models, making it more aerodynamic, improving handling, and increasing its visual appeal. It also boasts excellent visibility due to its large windows.

Plus, it offers many trim options, powertrains, and added technology. The interior also gives you options and plenty of room. And because of its excellent handling, it’s a very safe but sporty ride. There’s even a hybrid option if you’re looking to be more eco-conscious.

Should you buy a 2020 Escape?

Overall, the 2020 Ford Escape is an affordable and fun option that, due to the pandemic, didn’t have a chance to impress. The 2020 model offers plenty of perks while remaining affordable.

The 2021 model is officially out, and it comes with some enticing stereo and technology upgrades and add-ons. However, that doesn’t mean you should count out the undersold 2020 model. In fact, you might even get a great deal on a 2020 model because Ford is offering incentives.
