The Nissan Frontier might not be the sportiest truck on the market, but it might outlast the rest. Since 1997, the Frontier has been a vehicle that Nissan relied on for their lineup. It was also one of the vehicles the brand took a gamble with new technology on, but that seems to have paid off. Nissan trucks have a pretty good reputation, but let’s look at how many miles it has the potential to last.

Will the Nissan Frontier make it past 200,000 miles?

Survey says: maybe. Since the Frontier has been around for so long, there have been hiccups in some years. VEHQ notes that some of the models between 2005 and 2010 had the most issues. But now that it is 2021, many of those past hiccups have been ironed out. 

Generally, you can expect to get at least 100,000 miles out of your new Nissan with proper maintenance. Plenty of used Frontiers are still available on the market, which says a lot about dependability. Plenty of under 100,000-mile trucks are available, which makes finding one easier.

Your Nissan Frontier mileage may vary depending on the year

The 2005 Frontier lists six recall notices on the NHTSA website, and transmission issues were well-known in the industry. The fuel economy averaged 15 miles per gallon, with only 11 in the city. In later years, a faulty radiator seal often led to cross-contamination of coolant and transmission oil. A radiator and transmission replacement could cost around $4,000 to fix. This was corrected and wasn’t much of an issue later on.

Those who used their truck for heavy towing might have incurred more repairs due to the extra wear and tear. As years went on, the reliability increased, but the fuel economy still held it back. The 2008 Frontier still got the estimated 15 miles per gallon, with 15 in the city. If a few extra stops at the gas station don’t both you, the Frontier can stay on your list.     

However, the 2005 Nissan truck has 529 complaints from owners on the NHTSA site alone. It has also landed on the list of years to avoid.

Is Nissan discontinuing the Frontier?

The short answer is no. But besides major upgrades in that area, the Nissan Frontier looks the same as when it came out. That’s all about to change in the 2022 model. After 15 years, a significant redesign is short. 

The 2020 Frontier model has a 310-horsepower, 3.8-liter V6 that should allow for better gas mileage. Besides better fuel efficiency, there were more reasons to avoid this model year than not. Once we know the 2021 truck better, we will likely have a more complete picture of the redesign.
