Electric vehicles have been growing in popularity in recent years. While at first, brands like Tesla were winning the game, now more and more manufacturers are entering the EV market. And, it’s not just cars and SUVs that are being electrified. Pickup trucks are a hot commodity in the United States, so it makes sense that brands such as Ford are exploring EV trucks to meet the needs of drivers who require utility.

The latest EV truck from Ford is the Ford F-150 Lightning. Will it be enough to win over rural truck owners, or will it be restricted to urban buyers?

What is the Ford F-150 Lightning?

The Ford Lightning is an EV truck, meaning that it has an electric powertrain. This full-size pickup was not built from the ground up, rather it is based on the popular F-Series truck. According to Ford Authority, a vast majority of Americans remain skeptical of EVs. But the Ford Lightning could change that.

Now, this truck is not the only EV model that is available on the market. But, Ford is a proven manufacturer of successful trucks. The Ford F-150 is one of the best-selling vehicles on the market, so it makes sense that the blue oval would be exploring an EV variant of this pickup.

Will the Ford F-150 Lightning be a real truck?

It makes sense that some might be doubting the capabilities of an EV truck, but the Ford Lightning is a true pickup. It will have an MSRP of around $40,000, and it has legitimate capability. The range is estimated at around 320 miles and it should have a 0-60 mph time of about four seconds.

Ford has stated that the 2022 F-150 Lightning will be able to haul up to 2,000 pounds and it can tow up to 10,000 lbs. That may not be as much as the most powerful ICE F-150, but it should be enough for most needs. Plus, you will not need to fill up at the pump.

Can the 2022 F-150 Lightning power a house?

Ford has stated that with regulated use, the 2022 Ford Lightning can power a house for up to three days. Now, under certain use, this will vary, but it certainly improves the practicality of this EV truck. Your typical full-size truck likely has ample power, but it surely does not have enough power to give your house electricity when the grid goes down.

Better yet, this pickup will have the capability to power things like tools and other equipment. Because of that, it will be ideal for handling work at the job site. And, you will have an EV that looks like a full-size truck.

Should you buy the F-150 Lightning?

Unfortunately, you cannot currently order an F-150 Lightning from the manufacturer. Much like the 2022 Ford Maverick, demand has exceeded supply when it comes to this pickup.

In the future, hopefully, Ford’s EV truck becomes more widely available. Especially if it wants to succeed among rural buyers.
