Consumer Reports recently ranked six new model full-size pickup trucks. The 2021 Nissan Titan took third place and was even able to beat out the classic Chevy Silverado.

Once considered solid as a rock, the Chevy truck predicted reliability has been dropping over the past few years. Owner satisfaction is also at an all-time low.

The Nissan Titan doesn’t do much better, with only 58% of consumers saying they would purchase the same model again. But, it does manage to outperform the Silverado, and that says a lot.

The Nissan Titan ranks higher than the Chevy Silverado

Consumer Reports gave the 2021 Nissan Titan an overall score of 55 out of 100, compared to the low-ranking 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 that received a dismal overall score of 45 out of 100.

The Nissan Titan is a worthy competitor in the light-duty pickup segment. Starting at $36,550, the energetic V8 offers a comfortable ride for both the driver and passengers. An estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg overall is average for a truck this size.

One of the reasons the Titan outranked the Silverado is the luxury interior. The cabin on the Chevy is filled with hard plastics and cheap accessories, whereas the Titan offers intuitive controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front and rear seating.

The seats on the Silverado are stiff, creating an uncomfortable ride according to to Consumer Reports. Chevrolet is aware of the problems with the Silverado’s comfort and will be providing a much-needed improved cabin in the 2022 models.

What Consumer Reports like about the 2021 Nissan Titan

Impressive towing features on the Titan include an integrated trailer brake controller, a sway bar, and a specialized system that makes hooking up the trailer hitch a breeze. The crew cab has a max towing capacity of 9,390 pounds with a payload capacity of 1,620 pounds.

Standard safety features on the Nissan Titan include blind-spot warning, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic detection, and automatic emergency braking.

Test drivers enjoyed the responsiveness of the Titan and felt the steering was well-weighted. The 5.6-liter V8 engine puts out 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, allowing the truck to go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.

Consumer Reports noted that the 2021 Nissan Titan is “more comfortable riding than the Chevrolet Silverado but not as cushy as the Ram 1500.”

Why the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 scored so low

The 2021 Ram 1500 and 2021 Toyota Tundra tied for first place in the Consumer Reports review of full-size trucks. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which has a starting price of $28,600, tanked primarily because of its lack of standard safety features and its low predicted reliability score.

The Silverado also received a 1 out of 5 score for fuel economy, with an EPA estimated rating of 11 mpg city / 24 mpg highway / 17 mpg overall. The overall ride, front-seat comfort, and interior fit and finish all received 3 out of a possible 5 points.

When it came to value, the Chevy Silverado only received a score of 44 out of a possible 100. Consumer Reports determines this score by asking its readers if they got what they wanted in a vehicle relative to the price they paid. With a low owner satisfaction score, it’s clear that Silverado owners are not impressed with their truck’s performance.

The Car Connection agreed that the Titan is a better choice due to the Silverado’s lack of active safety features, basic interior styling, and poor safety rating.
