Every 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport Supercar Has to Be Recalled…which Is Only 9
Bugatti had to issue a recall for every 2021 Chiron Pur Sport supercar made. Fortunately, that was only nine vehicles total. Is that a good or a bad thing? This is the time for supercar optimism. Only nine Bugatti Chiron vehicles need to get a new set of tires. Thoughts and prayers for those nine people.
The 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport isn’t a high volume supercar
Did you know the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) even did recall alerts for supercars like the Bugatti? Well, the company does, and it did for the entire run of the 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport. According to the NHTSA, the Chiron Pur Sport has an issue with cracking tires. Specifically, the rear tires might crack after 2,500 miles of use.
“Cracks in the rear tires may result in rapid loss of tire pressure, which can lead to a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.”
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
If you are a Bugatti owner, it’s time to pay attention. The NHTSA Campaign Number is 21V984000, and the related component is just the tires. The NHTSA lists the number of units affected is only nine. Nine total 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport supercars are impacted. That doesn’t seem like a lot, but at almost $4 million apiece…that’s around $36 million in cars affected.
What is wrong with the tires on the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport?
The 2021 Chiron Pur Sport tires tend to start cracking after 2,500 miles of use. Michelin rated these specific Michelin Cup 2 R 355/25-series tires for high speeds that the Chiron is capable of reaching. If you own one of these vehicles, a dealership is offering a solution. The NHTSA says that the dealership will replace the tires at “1,875 miles or when tire age reaches 1.5 years,” the NHTSA says. Once Bugatti creates a new tire suitable for the Chiron Pur Sport, the automaker can replace the tires again.
Bugatti asks that you not drive the vehicle until the tires get replaced if you have already reached 2,500 miles or 1.5 years of use on the tires. Bugatti sent a letter in the mail to owners on Dec. 30, 2021. Owners can call Bugatti customer service at 1-703-826-7545. Bugatti’s recall number for the tire issue is BUGCR025.
Owners can also check the VIN on the NHTSA website or give the NHTSA a call at 1-888-327-4236.
The specs on this supercar are pretty nuts
The Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is a pretty quick supercar, which is why a cracking tire is so important to fix. Bugatti says the Pur Sport has 1,479 hp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque. It has a zero to 62 mph time of around 2.3 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. If your tire cracks under most circumstances in this car, it could result in a terrible accident. Most supercar owners don’t drive a Bugatti Chiron very often due to the impressive power of the vehicle. That means the cars probably haven’t hit 2,500 miles on the tires yet. Just be thankful Bugatti didn’t recall the one-of-a-kind Bugatti La Voiture Noire.
