You can get turn-by-turn directions, make calls or receive them, send and receive messages, listen to music, and more. CarPlay uses the contacts on your iPhone to help you make calls, send texts, and find destinations.

Another feature is that CarPlay uses Siri Voice Control, so you can ask for what you want while you’re driving—allowing you to stay focused on the road hands-free. CarPlay even works with the built-in controls in your car—like a touchscreen, knob, or button.

Currently, most vehicles that provide Apple CarPlay support require you to plug in your phone in order to use it. Considering how much of your battery gets used when you have Waze or Google Maps open, that’s usually not a bad thing. In theory, you should arrive with a fully charged phone even if you’ve been using it for multiple things. That’s changing, though, with some automakers now offering a wireless version of CarPlay.
