Since its introduction in 1990, the Hyundai Elantra has been a fixture in the compact sedan class. It competes alongside the likes of the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, and Volkswagen Jetta, among others. TrueCar also named it the best compact car of 2022 – highlighting its spacious cabin, standard features, and warranty options. So, what about the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid? 

2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid engine specs

The Hyundai Elantra benefited from a complete redesign for its 2021 model year, and the latest iteration continues much of the Elantra’s seventh-generation updates. Namely, the sleek exterior styling and upgraded interior features.

There are two trim options on the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: the Limited and the Blue. Both are powered by a hybrid 1.6-liter engine that pushes out 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, Edmunds reports. That torque figure is also 60 lb-ft higher than the gas-powered Elantra From 0 to 60 mph in the Elantra Hybrid takes 8.7 seconds – 2 seconds faster than the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. 

Though they have the same powertrain and dimensions, efficiency does differ slightly between the two Elantra models. The Elantra Hybrid Blue gets a combined 54 mpg compared to the Elantra Hybrid Limited’s 50 mpg. The difference comes down to weight; the Limited trim weighs 104 pounds more. 

2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid standard features

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited trim’s higher weight has more standard features than the Elantra Hybrid Blue. In fact, leather-trimmed seats, 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and rear parking sensors all come standard. The Limited trim also offers adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, premium Bose audio systems, and Hyundai Digital Key – meaning you can use select smartphones as a key to the car.

However, the Blue trim gets plenty of features standard, too, including lots of safety features. Forward collision mitigation, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist, driver attention warning, rear automatic braking, and safe exit warning are all standard on the Blue trim (as well as all Hyundai Elantra models). You can also enjoy perks like keyless entry and heated front seats. Thanks to the host of safety features, the IIHS named the Elantra a top safety pick.

How reliable is the 2022 Elantra Hybrid? 

The new Hyundai Elantra scored well on reliability, earning an overall score of 74 out of 100 from Consumer Reports in 2021. As a whole, Consumer Reports ranked Hyundai 10th among the most reliable car brands for the year.

That said, one of the biggest draws to the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is the warranty Hyundai offers. Buyers can enjoy three warranties: 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside warranty, and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

There was a recall on 2019-2021 Elantra models for an issue with the pedestrian detection system. A recall has also been issued for the 2022 Elantra, per the website Cars. During a crash, the front passenger-side seat belt pretensioner may explode. 

How much is the new Elantra Hybrid?

Hyundai puts the 2022 Elantra Hybrid Blue’s MSRP at $23,850. The Elantra Hybrid Limited’s MSRP is a bit higher at $28,350. In the context of hybrid compact cars on the market, the Blue is around the same price point as a Toyota Corolla Hybrid (with one trim at $23,750) and less than a Honda Insight (its base trim at $25,760). The three warranties included on the Blue are better than both of those competitors. It also gets better combined fuel economy ratings than the others – 52 mpg combined for both the Corolla Hybrid and the Insight.

The Limited’s MSRP ($28,350) also compares well with the Insight’s Touring trim (MSRP of $29,790) with more standard features and roomier back seats.

Lastly, TrueCar ranked the Elantra Hybrid the best hybrid sedan on the market for 2022. With the safety features, warranties, comfort, and fuel efficiency, it’s easy to see why.
