In March of 2022, Chevrolet announced its first all-electric performance vehicle. Using a familiar name from the past, the Blazer SS EV is coming as a 2024 model. Blazer SS EV: “affordable, high-volume”
Although many details remain unavailable for now, there’s a bit of information we know about the new Blazer SS EV. According to MotorTrend, GM executive Mark Reuss previously said an upcoming Blazer EV would be “an affordable, high-volume entry.” Additionally, the teaser tweet from CEO Mary Barra above tells us more information is coming on July 18.
2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV: What we know so far
The current Blazer crossover available today is a Camaro-inspired model with a 228 horsepower turbocharged inline-four-cylinder or a naturally-aspirated V6 making 308 horsepower. Moreover, the new EV won’t have anything to do with today’s Blazer. However, since it’s a performance model, we expect it to be much more potent than the regular crossover. The EV should produce much more horsepower than even the V6 version.
Additionally, Chevy declined MT’s questions about a non-SS model. We’re unsure if there will be a standard model and a performance version or if Chevy is only releasing it as the SS model. Next, the Blazer SS EV will likely use GM’s Ultium vehicle platform for electric vehicles. In addition, it will likely use Ultium battery cells that GM says are 60 percent more powerful than those found in the Chevy Bolt.
Chevy’s first performance EV, not General Motors’
The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer SS EV will be the automaker’s first performance electric vehicle. However, its parent company, General Motors, is familiar with launching (and relaunching) electric performance models. GM has already relaunched Hummer as an all-electric performance brand, with sporty Cadillac and Buick EVs on the way. One of the Buick EVs is a crossover that sits lower and is designed to be sportier, which could indicate a lot is shared with the new Blazer. Lastly, there remains a rumor that the gas-powered Camaro will seize to exist, and an EV performance sedan will replace it.
How much will the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer SS EV cost?
Chevy has not provided details about pricing for the Blazer SS EV yet. However, Car and Driver took a shot at estimating the prices. Furthermore, the publication believes it will be more expensive than the Equinox in the Chevy lineup. Additionally, C/D is placing the SS model as the range-topping option above several other trim levels. If this pricing is the case, it certainly won’t be an affordable, high-volume model as the automaker claimed.
