The 2022 BMW iX electric midsize SUV is BMW’s foray into the electric SUV space. The iX is a historic model for the German automaker. The electric vehicle has shocked fans of the brand because it is so innovative. The iX is a win for BMW’s electric future, but the midsize SUV is far from perfect.

The BMW iX base model costs a pretty penny

The 2022 BMW iX starts at a whopping $83,200. It’s much more expensive than the average new vehicle. Luxury midsize SUVs tend to be pricey, but the iX’s entry-level model isn’t so “entry-level” for the average American consumer.

The BMW X5 is the iX’s closest relative in terms of size. The 2022 X5 costs $60,600. Even the X5’s M50i final trim level is more affordable than the electric iX. Electric vehicles tend to cost more than gas-powered vehicles, but there’s a $22,600 price difference between the X5 and the iX.

Does the iX justify its price? The X5 makes 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. It achieves 21 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway. The iX makes a massive 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque. The electric luxury midsize SUV gets 324 miles of standard driving range.

So, all things considered, the iX does offer great value for the money in terms of performance specs. Its interior also justifies its high starting price (for those who can afford it). The BMW iX comes standard with ambient lighting, perforated Sensatec uphostery, and a floating center console. BMW’s new electric SUV is amazing, it just isn’t in the price range of the average American consumer.

The iX’s kidney grille is too big of a change for some drivers

The BMW iX is polarizing for many different reasons. Its new toothy grin is causing quite the controversy among fans of the German automaker.

The iX’s kidney grille is its most distinct characteristic. It seems that fans either hate it or love it. The real question is, will some buyers hate the grille enough to avoid buying the electric SUV completely? Whether the BMW iX’s new grille is attractive or not is completely subjective, but BMW could lose some points among buyers for drastically deviating from its winning exterior design formula.

The best iX trim costs over $100K

The BMW iX M60 is the quickest version of the iX. MotorTrend claims that the iX M60 can go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds. The iX M60 produces 610 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque.

The M60 starts at $108,900. It’s way too expensive for most average drivers, but the final trim level is the iX’s true potential unleashed.
