Exciting Hybrid Plug-In Jeep Models Are In The Works
When you think about hybrid plug-in Jeeps, think outside the Wrangler, because multiple models are coming. The Jeep Renegade and Compass are also getting plug-in versions, giving consumers a variety of options to choose from.
Multiple Jeep Hybrid Plug-In Models Are Coming
Jeep plug-in models have been in the works for quite a while. The first hybrid Jeep Wrangler was introduced in 2008 but had to be put on hold due to economic issues at the time. Now over ten years later, we get to anticipate seeing every single Jeep model having a hybrid version by 2022.
The Jeep Commander PHEV has also been released in China. This five-door hybrid Jeep looks like a Compass and has an electric range of 41 miles. Hopefully, it will be released in the U.S., but Jeep hasn’t confirmed or denied this information.
Plus, e certainly hope that ongoing concerns about COVID-19 won’t delay production, but we may have to wait and see.
In the meantime, we can look at the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe and speculate what’s to come for the Renegade and Compass.
Jeep 4xe
4xe is the title that all hybrid, plug-in Jeep models will have to wear as a badge of honor. It means that the vehicles are not only hybrid electric, but 4×4 as well. This will be adding capabilities to hybrids that we haven’t seen yet.
There also seems to be a race to pump out 4×4 electric vehicles as Prius truck rumors loom and as Ford continues to work on an electric F-150 for 2021.
Photos of the Jeep Wrangler hybrid have been seen from a few different car shows. From taking a look, we can see that the big four-door jeeps have a space to be plugged in under the driver’s side window.
So, the look of the Wrangler remains pretty much unchanged aside from the new grille design where the headlights slightly edge into the lines.
You can also find changes under the hood as the Wrangler borrows technology from the Crysler Pacifica Hybrid. The Wrangler has the same two-motor build with a 3.6 liter V6 internal combustion unit. However, in the Wrangler, this engine will power the four-wheel-drive system.
We would like to know more, but everything about these Jeep hybrids is being kept under wraps for now.
The Jeep Wrangler will have a more robust engine to provide power for more rugged off-roading capabilities.
At the same time, the Renegade and Compass will offer more pavement friendly, daily driver options.
We can speculate that the Renegade and Compass will have a different type of engine. They will have a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine that’s paired with an electric motor to generate between 190 and 240 horsepower.
The current Jeep Renegade Trailhawk only produces 180 hp, so this will be a bit of a power boost.
In the fully electric mode, the Renegade and Compass will have a range of only 31 miles, which is low. The electric model will also have a top speed of 81 mph.
We might be able to look at the Fiat 500 EV for more clues about the smaller hybrid Jeep models, as we will see the Fiat released first. It’s an impressive 199-mile range, and 42kWh battery would be pretty exciting on the Renegade.
Until then, we look forward to car shows to learn more information and hope to see the Wrangler 4xe make its debut toward the end of 2020.
