The days of driving with just seat belts are gone. Now the focus is on safety, and the vehicle with the most features often comes out on top with both critics and consumers. Lexus seems to be taking this new trend seriously and has added some coveted new safety features to the 2021 Lexus NX, according to MotorTrend.

Lexus is adding in new safety features

There’s nothing consumers like more than getting great features standard. After all, why pay more when you get it standard?

Lexus may not be offering a ton of safety features as standard on the 2021 NX, but it has decided to offer blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on all trim levels. It’s not even making it optional, meaning owners don’t feel like they’re being nickeled and dimed.

Still, that’s not exactly a lot, especially when you compare it to SUVs like the Kia Telluride. So what else is new that might be tempting to consumers?

What else is new for 2021?

There aren’t a ton of new features on the new 2021 Lexus NX, but there are some notable features that are worth mentioning. The power-folding, auto-dimming side mirrors are a rather cool feature that makes adjusting your mirrors easier than ever. The dimming feature is also great for different times of the day. For anyone who has ever tried to look in the mirror when the sun is setting, this could be a game-changer.

Another new change is the steering wheel horn pad. Again, it’s not a major change, but it does look cooler than previous renditions.

For anyone who loves green and is frustrated that it isn’t offered as a paint color on most cars, the NX has a new shade. It may not be the most popular color on the road, but given all the shades of black, red, and gray, a green vehicle would definitely stand out in a good way.

If you don’t mind upgrading, there is a kick-activated power-operated tailgate. This could make bringing in the groceries less frustrating.

The NX 300h F Sport is offering a few new features. The limited-production Black Line special edition is getting a new dark trim and optional bright blue paint.

Is the Lexus NX worthy of its price tag?

The 2021 Lexus NX has a starting price of $38,535. That’s not bad, but for many consumers, it certainly isn’t cheap. So, is this a good price for all that’s offered? 

MotorTrend didn’t sound very excited when discussing the NX. It reports, “The NX’s edgy styling makes it look exciting. Is its driving experience exciting, though? Not so much. The NX feels heavy; steering responsiveness is good but accompanied by considerable body roll. Overall, it’s underpowered and not sporty compared to newer competitors.”

The NX comes standard with a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive. For anyone who wants AWD, it’s available, but you’ll have to shell out more money to get it, This engine combination isn’t exactly powerful, but it gets the job done. 

The body frame looks modern and cool, but it’s also plagued by some major blind spots that can prove to be troublesome. For anyone who has trouble turning their neck, this might not be the SUV for you. Yes, it comes with blind-spot monitoring, but if you prefer to check for yourself, this could be a major problem.

Another problem for the 2021 Lexus NX is the lack of headroom. While the second and third rows are often known for being uncomfortable, the passenger side seat in the front is also unpleasant for anyone who is tall. There is plenty of legroom, however.

While there are a few new features added to the 2021 model, it might be better to wait for a new generation to come out before purchasing the NX. Until then, there are plenty of competitors in the SUV division that could provide you with a superior vehicle for the same price.
