For the last few model years, critics have described the Toyota Tundra using phrases like “long in the tooth” and “dated.” It consistently ranks low on trucks lists. Now the new generation Toyota Tundra is coming up. But how can we expect the 2022 Toyota Tundra to go from the worst to the best pickup truck?

Reliability has been the Tundra’s only calling card for several model years now. How is it all of a sudden going to be a “world beater” as dealers have been saying? That’s a pretty bold statement.

The 2021 Toyota Tundra is ready for an upgrade

Even though this truck still has its selling points, it’s been aging. While reliability remains at the top of its game, it definitely falls short of other models. Consumer Reports ranked it high among full-size pickup trucks. However, we can only assume this is due largely to the fact that this truck boasts such rock solid reliability.

It has some of the worst fuel mileage in the segment. Plus, it received a very low road test score. It’s just not quite living up to the newer generations like the 2021 Ram 1500 or the 2021 Ford F-150. The tech is behind, handling could use some refining, and it would certainly benefit from a full work up. Overall this has been a great Toyota Tundra generation. But we are ready for the 2022 Toyota Tundra. Will it really be the best pickup truck?

The 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup truck

So far, there has been quite a bit of speculating as to what all the 2022 Toyota Tundra will bring to the table in its fresh generation. Will there be a hybrid powertrain? What will it look like?

Last year, the 2021 Toyota TRD Pro color was revealed over the summer. Could that mean the Tundra is set for its unveiling this summer? Maybe. But we know Toyota keeps things sealed pretty tight until game time. So, it’s really anyone’s guess. One thing we do know is that the Japanese car company does plan to introduce several new electrified models to the market in the next year or two.

So this could be another pickup truck with a hybrid option––like the all-new Ford F-150. It’s sure to look great, remain true to its rugged Toyota truck roots, and offer the capability for a wide range of needs. However, it’s mostly a guessing game. Are dealers right? Could this actually be the best truck in its new generation? Even when it’s been falling so far behind for years? Only time will tell.

The new Tundra has been spied

The 2022 Toyota Tundra model has indeed been spied. However, it was covered in camouflage. In the video below, a viewer sent a video to TFL Trucks of the new Tundra model in camouflage towing a trailer in the Colorado mountains. If you’re a fan, this is pretty exciting.

It means they are out there. The 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup truck is alread being put through the paces. The full reveal could be just around the corner. Those who love Toyota trucks are probably on the edge of their seats. I know I am. But only time will tell if it will go from being low on critics’ lists to being the best truck around.
