While some people might think a truck isn’t a reasonable vehicle for the long-term, this Toyota disagrees. Two major publications list the best 10-year-old compact pickup truck as the 2013 Toyota Tacoma. Coincidence? No, as the Tacoma is one of the best-selling vehicles on the market and has been for almost two decades. These two experts’ agreement makes sense for the best used Toyota truck years.

Is a 10 year old used truck worth it?

Buying a 10-year-old truck might seem crazy, but these pickups still have plenty of miles left. When MotorTrend selected its best 10 year old compact pickup truck, the 2013 Toyota Tacoma had the most to offer. The experts noted that the Tacoma had plenty of trim levels, bed lengths, and engine/transmission options to choose from. On top of that, it also has the best towing capacity in the segment.

A truck like the 2013 Tacoma doesn’t necessarily need to deliver on all of its promises up front, either. That’s why it is one of the best 10 year old compact pickup trucks but is still one of the top vehicles available today.

In fact, the Tacoma is one of the longest-lasting pickup trucks on the market. iSeeCars says the Tacoma could last 235,070 miles or more. About 2.2% of Tacomas on the road have more than 200,000 miles, higher than the average of 1.9% for the midsize truck category.

Is the 2013 Toyota Tacoma a good used pickup truck?

If you ask U.S. News, the best 10 year old compact pickup truck is the 2013 Toyota Tacoma. The experts gave the 2013 pickup truck high marks for its off-road capability, spacious cabin, and long history of reliability. For a 2013 truck, the 15-21 mpg in the city and 19-25 mpg on the highway is still pretty decent.

With the 159 hp four-cylinder engine, the Tacoma can still tow 3,500 pounds. Upgrading to the 236 hp V6 brought the max towing capacity up to 6,500 pounds, but both are suitable for most situations. The TRD off-road package was another benefit, but there might be fewer of these options out there.

One thing to be aware of is the mixed safety scores. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2013 Tacoma a few “good” scores and one “marginal.” Many of the modern safety tests were not around back then. The 2013 Tacoma earned four out of five stars in overall safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Tacoma has been a best-seller for a long time

If you look at the best pickup trucks on MotorTrend and U.S. News in more recent years, the Toyota Tacoma is still holding firm. The segment is a lot different these days, but Toyota’s Tacoma has been one of the best-selling vehicles for more than 17 years. For the most part, most outlets identify the Tacoma as a midsize truck in 2022.

Toyota knows a thing or two about building reliable and long-lasting trucks, with the 2013 Tacoma a shining example of that. The fact that MotorTrend and U.S. News agree on that is the least surprising part of it all.
