The 2022 Subaru Outback is one of the most popular vehicles in the world. It’s a safe, reliable SUV that comes at an affordable price. For most people, it’s a no-brainer to purchase the Outback. However, deciding which version of the midsize SUV is the best option can be challenging. In fact, experts disagree on the best 2022 Subaru Outback trim. Base, Premium, Onyx Edition XT, Limited, or another model?

According to Edmunds, the most popular version of the Outback is the Premium trim. Starting just above the Base model at $31,020, it’s a well-equipped model at an affordable price. As the most popular Outback, it’s clear that consumers think it’s the best version of the vehicle. However, not every expert believes customers are purchasing the best trim for the Subaru SUV.

Edmunds’ best Outback trim

the 2022 Subaru Outback experts disagree on the best outback trim, premium onyx edition xt, or another model?

Firstly, the experts at Edmunds recommend buying the Onyx Edition XT. Two spots above the Premium model, the Onyx Edition XT costs $37,020. Edmunds likes it for the multitude of features, but mainly for the engine. It’s the cheapest way to get the Outback’s turbocharged engine, which is far better than the base engine. More than one expert notes the Subaru SUV’s base engine as “underwhelming.”

Along with the upgraded turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, Onyx Edition XT models get an upgraded all-wheel drive system. It comes with more drive modes than the lower Outback models. Lastly, this version of the SUV gets unique body cladding. Other than that, it shares almost every feature and piece of equipment with the Outback Premium.

Although the experts don’t agree, one expert agrees with buyers. Car and Driver recommend buying the 2022 Subaru Outback Premium trim level. C/D cites that the Premium model has the best standard and optional features for the price. Upgrading to the turbocharged engine is also possible and costs $6,000. That may sound like a lot, but the Premium’s low starting price makes it hurt a little less.

Standard equipment includes heated and power-folding exterior mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, LED foglights, tinted rear windows, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, an 11.6-inch touchscreen display, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. In short, it’s a significant upgrade over the Base model, which uses dual seven-inch screens. However, it includes the same standard features, like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights, hill descent control, automatic climate control, and roof rails.

What is the best 2022 Subaru Outback trim?

In conclusion, we find it difficult to disagree with either expert’s opinion. On the one hand, the Premium model is an excellent collection of features and tech without breaking the bank. Conversely, the Onyx Edition XT is a significant step up without spending too much money. The ultimate deciding factor is the engine. If you’re not a fan of the underwhelming base engine, we’d recommend buying the Onyx Edition XT instead of paying $6,000 to upgrade the Premium trim. As a result, both models cost a similar amount, but the Onyx Edition XT comes with more extras. Experts disagree on the best 2022 Subaru Outback trim level, but we agree with both.
