Edmunds says the most popular 2022 Ford Expedition trim is the XLT model. The second cheapest is the one consumers usually buy out of seven available options. Usually, the most affordable model is the most desirable, especially for expensive full-size SUVs. However, most people are willing to spend a little extra for the XLT over the XL base model; why is that?

Firstly, the XL base model starts at $55,120, while the XLT costs $59,185. Although more expensive, the difference isn’t too significant compared to most other trim levels. For example, the Limited model is the next step up from the XLT trim, which costs $68,795. Moreover, the base model comes well-equipped, so adding the extra XLT equipment for just another $4,000 makes it feel like a bargain.

According to Edmunds, the most popular XLT model is well-equipped. Every version of the 2022 Ford Expedition uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine making 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Alternatively, buyers who upgrade to the Platinum trim get a power bump to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft. Finally, the Timberline trim and Stealth Performance package raise those numbers to 440 hp and 510 lb-ft.

Next, technology and features are already plentiful for the XL base model. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a 12-inch touchscreen, the Trailer Tow package, Ford Co-Pilot360, and more. The CoPilot360 package contains automatic high beams, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a lane-keeping system, and automatic emergency braking.

Although it seems like consumers are buying an excellent trim level, experts don’t recommend it. Unfortunately, getting the XL base model is more cost-effective since the XLT trim doesn’t add much to the lineup. Then, skipping over the XLT model is expensive but the best way to go. Two trusted experts recommend getting the next step up, the 2022 Ford Expedition Limited.

First, Edmunds says the Limited trim “represents the best value in the Expedition lineup. It comes with a fair share of luxury features, such as a power tailgate, power-folding running boards and leather upholstery, as well as nice-to-have features including an upgraded audio system, front parking sensors and heated second-row seats.”

Next, Car and Driver agree with the other publication. Critics agreeing is usually a good sign that their opinions are pointed in the right direction. Like Edmunds, C/D says it has a nice standard mix of features, and both mention the Stealth Performance package. Newly available to the Expedition, it’s an expensive optional package that adds a lot of value.

If you want your full-size SUV to perform its best, purchase the most powerful engine in the lineup. For the 2022 Ford Expedition, the only way to do that is with the Stealth Performance package.
